Methylmercury Stable Isotopes: New Insights on Assessing Aquatic Food Web Bioaccumulation in Legacy Impacted Regions

Tylor J. Rosera et al.

Summary: By measuring stable isotopes of total mercury (HgT), researchers have been able to identify important processes and transformations affecting different sources of mercury (Hg). However, using HgT stable isotopes to track bioaccumulation of Hg sources in different food web compartments can be challenging in the presence of varying methylmercury (MeHg) contents. This study examined the differences in HgT and MeHg stable isotope ratios across the food web of the lower Fox River and found that while there was a large range in HgT values due to varying MeHg contents in tissues, the MeHg isotope values were consistently conserved. Mathematical approaches to estimate MeHg isotope values were also explored, with mostly comparable results to measured values in the Fox River.

Mercury Isotope Fractionation by Internal Demethylation and Biomineralization Reactions in Seabirds: Implications for Environmental Mercury Science

Alain Manceau et al.

Summary: The study measured stable Hg isotope values in relevant tissues of giant petrels, finding similar isotopic fractionation values for methylmercury, Hg-tetraselenolate and mercury selenide across different tissues. Differences in isotopic values between MeHg and Hg(Sec)(4) were attributed to mass-dependent fractionation from the demethylation reaction of Hg(Sec)(4). Additionally, differences in isotopic values and mass-independent anomalies between Hg(Sec)(4) and HgSe were observed, likely due to equilibrium isotope effects of biomineralization from Hg(Sec)(4) to HgSe.

Isotope Fractionation from In Vivo Methylmercury Detoxification in Waterbirds

Brett A. Poulin et al.

Summary: The study indicates that in waterbirds, a portion of methylmercury is demethylated to inorganic mercury, primarily in the form of mercury tetraselenolate. The isotopic ratios of mercury in tissues correlate linearly with the abundance of mercury tetraselenolate, suggesting a kinetic isotope effect during in vivo methylmercury demethylation. The findings demonstrate a selenium-dependent demethylation reaction in birds and provide new insights into the internal transformations and cycling of methylmercury and mercury tetraselenolate.

Distribution of mercury isotope signatures in Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China, after long-term interventions

Shuyuan Huang et al.

Summary: Isotope signatures of mercury (Hg) in various fractions from Yundang Lagoon, Xiamen, China showed significant variations in mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionations. Three main sources of Hg in the lagoon seawater were identified, with photochemical reactions being the main process causing isotope fractionation. Mercury isotopes were found to be powerful tools for tracing Hg sources and understanding Hg biogeochemical cycling, demonstrating the importance of long-term interventions in the lagoon.

Methylmercury determination in freshwater biota and sediments: Static headspace GC-MS compared to direct mercury analyzer

Lucia Valsecchi et al.

Summary: Two analytical methods were developed and compared for determination of MeHg in freshwater biota and sediments. Method I demonstrated higher recovery rates compared to Method II, which may face interferences and limited sensitivity issues during sediment analysis. Both methods were found suitable for analyzing MeHg in complex environmental matrices, with Method I showing better performance overall.
