Drug utilisation in neonatal units in England and Wales: a national cohort study

Asma Al-Turkait et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to describe the patterns of drug utilization in neonatal units. The study found that antibiotics and caffeine were the most frequently used drugs in neonatal medicine, regardless of gestational age. Preterm infants were exposed to a high burden of drugs, particularly antibiotics. Changes in drug use patterns reflected the emergence of evidence in some areas, but a number of non-evidence-based drugs continued to be widely used.

Different cardiovascular and pulmonary phenotypes for single- and double-knock-out mice deficient in BMP9 and BMP10

Claire Bouvard et al.

Summary: BMP9 and BMP10 play redundant roles in cardiovascular homeostasis and pulmonary arterial hypertension, but have specific roles under chronic hypoxic conditions. BMP9 contributes to chronic hypoxia-induced pulmonary vascular remodeling, while BMP10 plays a role in hypoxia-induced cardiac remodeling.

Pulmonary hypertension in bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Georg Hansmann et al.

Summary: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major complication in prematurely born infants, and pulmonary hypertension (PH) associated with BPD (BPD-PH) is linked to high mortality rates. Recent advancements in adult pulmonary hypertension treatment have opened up new options for children with BPD-PH, but there is still a lack of pediatric data, necessitating further research.

Respiratory outcomes of new bronchopulmonary dysplasia in adolescents: A multicenter study

Santiago Perez-Tarazona et al.

Summary: Adolescents born extremely preterm with new bronchopulmonary dysplasia have poorer pulmonary function compared to those without BPD or born moderate-late preterm. Further research is needed to investigate the potential association between new BPD and early-onset chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in adulthood.

Single cell transcriptomic analysis of murine lung development on hyperoxia-induced damage

Maria Hurskainen et al.

Summary: This study utilizes single-cell RNA sequencing to investigate cellular dynamics during normal or impaired lung development in mice, finding that exposure to hyperoxia alters cell composition, with inflammatory signaling identified as a key driver of changes induced by hyperoxia.

Diagnosis and management of bronchopulmonary dysplasia

Margaret Gilfillan et al.

Summary: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common chronic lung disease in infants, associated with various severe consequences. Research suggests that BPD primarily affects infants born before 29 weeks' gestational age and may lead to chronic diseases in adulthood. Early diagnosis and treatment of BPD are crucial.

Stem cells for bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants: A randomized controlled phase II trial

Summary: The study demonstrated the safety and feasibility of MSC transplantation for BPD in preterm infants through a phase I clinical trial. The efficacy of MSCs for BPD treatment in premature infants was investigated in a phase II trial, where although inflammatory cytokines were significantly reduced, the overall primary outcome was not significantly improved. Subgroup analysis showed a significant improvement with MSC transplantation in the 23-24 GW group.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence and risk factors of moderate-severe Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD)/Death in extremely low gestation age neonates (ELGANs). It found that the prevalence of moderate-severe BPD/death decreased significantly with increasing gestational age, and the need for mechanical ventilation (MV) on Day7 was independently predictive of the composite outcome.

Summary: Ventilatory support for premature infants can impair pulmonary development, while early-life exposure to high oxygen levels can alter lung cellular landscape, potentially leading to long-term lung injury and adult pulmonary dysfunction.
