How wide should you view to fight? Establishing the size of the visual field necessary for grip fighting in judo

Summary: This study used eye tracking and motion capture systems to find that judokas predominantly fixate on their opponent's chest during combat sports, requiring at least a 30-40 degree radius visual field to simultaneously monitor both hands of the opponent most of the time. These findings have important implications for visually impaired Paralympic judo athletes.

Rapid weight loss in visually impaired judo athletes: Prevalence, magnitude, and methods

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, magnitude, and methods of rapid weight loss (RWL) in visually impaired (VI) judo athletes, and compare these aspects between males and females. The main results showed that most VI judo athletes lost weight to compete. Most methods included gradual dieting and increased exercise volume. The judo coach/sensei was the person who most influenced the athletes in RWL. There were no significant differences between the sexes regarding the RWL magnitude and methods used.

Psychometric Suitability of Adaptations to the Special Judo Fitness Test for Athletes With Visual Impairment

Summary: This study aimed to test the reliability, sensitivity, construct, and logical validity of an adapted Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT) for judo athletes with visual impairment. The findings showed that the SJFT with the sonorous stimulus was valid for assessing judo athletes with varying degrees of visual impairment, and was the only version that discriminated elite from sub-elite athletes.

Perspectives on research conducted at the Paralympic Games

Summary: Research projects conducted during Paralympic Games from Atlanta 1996 to PyeongChang 2018 focused on athletes' health, performance, evidence-based classification, participation, Paralympic legacy, and education, in alignment with IPC Research Strategic Goals. While some projects demonstrated high relevance and became standard operations, overall, collaboration with expert-stakeholders could enhance the impact of these projects. Sport science research in the Paralympic Movement should prioritize speed and collaboration to keep pace with evolution.

May the best-sighted win? The relationship between visual function and performance in Para judo

Summary: This study aimed to establish the optimal cut-off point(s) between classes in a new, evidence-based classification system for vision-impaired judo. The results showed that visual acuity was significantly associated with judo performance, and it was recommended to split VI judo into two sport classes to minimize the impact of impairment on the outcome of competition, despite variability in the cut-off point between 2.0 and 3.5 logMAR.

Sports injuries at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Paralympic Games: use of diagnostic imaging services

Summary: The study described occurrences of sports-related injuries during the Rio 2016 Summer Paralympic Games using imaging techniques. A total of 109 injuries were reported among 4378 athletes, with bone stress injuries being most common. MRI was the most utilized imaging modality, comprising 63% of imaging examinations. The findings may help in developing future prevention programs for elite para athletes.

Para sport translation of the IOC consensus on recording and reporting of data for injury and illness in sport

Summary: In 2020, the IOC proposed a universal methodology for recording data on injury and illness in sport. This addendum to the IOC consensus statement focuses on guiding Para sport researchers through the complexities and nuances in collecting, registering, reporting, and interpreting data specific to Para athlete health. Through a formal consensus development process led by experts in Para sports medicine and epidemiology, detailed recommendations and definitions were provided to improve understanding of injury and illness patterns in Para sport. The ultimate goal is to tailor evidence-informed prevention programs and improve medical services planning for Para sport events.

Effect of vision impairment on match-related performance and technical variation in attacking moves in Paralympic judo

Getting a grip on the resilience to blur: The impact of simulated vision loss on a visually guided combat sports interaction

The study focuses on judo as a visually guided combat sport task, finding that visual acuity is a better predictor of grip fighting performance than contrast sensitivity.
