Shelter from the cytokine storm: Healthy living is a vital preventative strategy in the COVID-19 era

Summary: COVID-19 continues to have a devastating global impact, with emerging variants reducing vaccination efficacy. Measures such as social distancing and stay-at-home mandates will continue to be necessary. Research has shown that individuals with unhealthy lifestyles, chronic disease risk factors, and/or confirmed diagnoses of chronic conditions are at the greatest risk of hospitalization, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and death if infected with COVID-19. The cytokine storm is believed to be a pathological response to COVID-19 infection leading to poor outcomes. This review highlights the association between unhealthy lifestyles and vulnerability to the cytokine storm, as well as the physiological mechanisms that healthy living behaviors can elicit to decrease the risk. The findings suggest a new global syndemic where unhealthy lifestyles, chronic disease risk factors, and COVID-19 outcomes are intricately linked. The promotion of healthy living behaviors is crucial in addressing this syndemic and improving resilience to both chronic diseases and viral infections.
