Captive by the Uncertainty Experiences with Anticipatory Guidance for People Living with Dementia and Their Caregivers at a Specialty Dementia Clinic

Adi Shafir et al.

Summary: This qualitative study aimed to understand the experiences of people living with dementia (PWD) and caregivers who received anticipatory guidance about dementia from a specialty dementia clinic. The results showed that participants felt they received incomplete or hesitant guidance on disease prognosis and course from their clinicians, and sought additional information from the internet, books, and support groups. They appreciated guidance on behavioral, safety, and communication issues from clinicians, but relied more on non-clinical sources for timely and advanced guidance, particularly regarding legal and financial planning.

I Didn't Sign Up for This: Perspectives from Persons Living with Dementia and Care Partners on Challenges, Supports, and Opportunities to Add Geriatric Neuropalliative Care to Dementia Specialty Care

Krista L. Harrison et al.

Summary: Dementia specialty centers in the United States have the potential to develop innovative and holistic care in care systems otherwise divided by discipline or payer. However, current support systems are insufficient to address the challenges faced by dementia patients and care partners. These challenges include disease-related distress, social and relational challenges, and clinical care fragmentation. The findings of this study can inform the development of novel interventions to improve dementia care.
