Summary: This study found that the administration of free water can impact clinical outcomes in medically complex patients, with patients receiving lower volumes of thin liquids being less likely to undergo chest X-rays during follow-up.

Prucalopride for Treatment of Upper Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Children

Suzanna Hirsch et al.

Summary: In a retrospective study of children prescribed prucalopride for upper GI symptoms at a single tertiary care center, 65% of patients showed symptomatic improvement at their first follow-up after prucalopride initiation. Patients with enteral tubes, pulmonary comorbidities, and neurologic comorbidities were more likely to experience improvement. Among patients with feeding difficulties, 79% showed improvements in oral or tube feeding.

Belching in children: Prevalence and association with gastroesophageal reflux disease

Daisuke Masui et al.

Summary: The study revealed that gastric belching is more common in children with physiological AET, while reflux-related gastric belching is more prevalent in patients with borderline and pathological AET. Supra-gastric belching is very rare in the pediatric population.

Summary: Comprehensive Behavioral Treatment (CBT-R) for rumination syndrome (RS) in an outpatient setting shows positive treatment outcomes for majority of patients, with most patients demonstrating complete resolution of symptoms, providing a superior treatment option for some pediatric patients.

Characterization of Eosinophilic Esophagitis From the European Pediatric Eosinophilic Esophagitis Registry (pEEr) of ESPGHAN

Salvatore Oliva et al.

Summary: The phenotypic aspects of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) in pediatric patients vary according to age. Young children commonly present with non-specific symptoms, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, and inflammatory endoscopic lesions, while adolescents often have dysphagia or food impaction, fibrostenotic lesions, and a better response to proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).

Gastrojejunal (GJ) tube feeding: developing a service and evaluating associated complications in a paediatric surgical centre

Rebecca Williams et al.

Summary: GJ tube feeding is an effective and safe method for managing children with foregut dysmotility. Reversibility of this method is an important asset as many patients do not require permanent jejunal feeding. A dedicated team is needed to coordinate tube replacements and provide long-term jejunal feeding efficiently.

Cow's Milk Allergy or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Can We Solve the Dilemma in Infants?

Silvia Salvatore et al.

Summary: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) and gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) can present with similar symptoms in infants, making diagnosis challenging. Clinical response to a cow's milk free diet is not always indicative of immune system involvement, and diagnostic tests like oral food challenge, esophageal pH impedance and endoscopy are recommended but not always feasible for all infants. Over- and under-diagnosis of CMA or GERD may occur due to the diagnostic difficulty.

Trends in fundoplication volume for pediatric gastroesophageal reflux disease

Nathan L. Maassel et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been a 3-fold decrease in institutional volume for fundoplication in children with GERD, as well as an almost 2-fold decrease in case volume reported by pediatric surgery fellows. While patient characteristics remained relatively unchanged, the trends in surgery indicate a shift in care for children with severe GERD.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of metoclopramide prophylaxis in premature infants with GERD. Results showed that there was no significant difference in GERD-related symptoms between the metoclopramide group and the placebo group, and no adverse effects attributable to the drug were found.

Esophageal Nocturnal Baseline Impedance and Post-ref lux Swallow-induced Peristaltic Wave Index in Identifying Proton Pump Inhibitor-refractory Non-erosive Reflux Disease

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The study compared esophageal mean nocturnal baseline impedance (MNBI) and post-reflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave (PSPW) index in patients without evidence of erosive reflux disease. MNBI and PSPW index were found to differentiate between non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) and functional heartburn (FH) patients and were related to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) treatment efficacy in NERD patients.
