Behavioral stability of alcohol consumption and socio-demographic correlates of change among a nationally representative cohort of US adults

Klajdi Puka et al.

Summary: This study estimated the probability of transitioning between different categories of alcohol use among US adults and examined the effects of socio-demographic characteristics on those transitions. The findings suggest that certain demographic subgroups are more likely to transition into or persist in higher levels of alcohol consumption.

Alcohol-Attributable Deaths Help Drive Growing Socioeconomic Inequalities In US Life Expectancy, 2000-18

Charlotte Probst et al.

Summary: Socioeconomic gaps in life expectancy have widened in the United States since 2000, with specific causes contributing to these disparities still unknown. A study found that the life expectancy gap between men with low education (high school diploma or less) and high education (college degree) increased by three years, while women experienced a five-year increase. The decline in cardiovascular disease mortality among the highly educated population accounted for major inequalities between 2000 and 2010. However, deaths from causes with an alcohol-attributable fraction of 20 percent or more became the dominant driver of socioeconomic divergence between 2010 and 2018. Implementing cost-effective alcohol control policies is crucial for reducing health disparities.

The dose-response relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and alcohol-attributable mortality risk-a systematic review and meta-analysis

Charlotte Probst et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with lower socioeconomic status are at increased risk of alcohol-attributable mortality, and this risk increases with greater socioeconomic deprivation, particularly when education levels decrease. The dose-response relationship between socioeconomic deprivation and alcohol-attributable mortality risk can guide priorities in targeting public health initiatives.
