Impact of sleeve gastrectomy compared to Roux-en-y gastric bypass upon hedonic hunger and the relationship to post-operative weight loss

Janine Maria Makaronidis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing hedonic hunger and found that Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy can alleviate hedonic hunger, helping to maintain weight loss. Changes in hedonic hunger were correlated with post-operative weight loss, indicating that PFS may play a predictive role in the outcomes of SG and RYGB surgeries.

Changes in hedonic hunger and food reward after a similar weight loss induced by a very low-energy diet or bariatric surgery

Marthe Isaksen Aukan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare changes in hedonic hunger and food reward in individuals with severe obesity achieving 10% to 15% weight loss with a very low-energy diet (VLED) alone or VLED and bariatric surgery. The results showed that regardless of the treatment modality, weight loss can reduce hedonic hunger, but bariatric surgery leads to additional benefits in terms of food reward and preferences.

Nutrient Intake and Deficiency of Patients 1 Year After Bariatric Surgery: Tehran Obesity Treatment Study (TOTS)

Firoozeh Hosseini-Esfahani et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess nutrient adequacy in patients who underwent GB or SG surgery 1 year postoperatively, finding inadequate nutrient intakes and serum nutritional deficiencies, with better body composition in SG patients. Some patients had possibly adequate nutrient intakes, and nutrient adequacy was positively associated with fat-free mass. Compliance with dietary guidelines and supplementation needs to be carefully monitored postoperatively.

Methodological issues in assessing change in dietary intake and appetite following gastric bypass surgery: A systematic review

Tamsyn L. Redpath et al.

Summary: Gastric bypass surgery is effective in reducing overall energy intake and increasing postprandial satiety in obese patients. However, relative macronutrient intake and premeal hunger do not show significant changes post-surgery. Further research utilizing objective measurement methods is needed to better understand the long-term effects of appetite and dietary intake following gastric bypass surgery.

A systematic review and meta-analyses of food preference modifications after bariatric surgery

Erika Guyot et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analyses found that following bariatric surgery, there were changes in food preferences in terms of macronutrient intake, food selection, and overall food appreciation. Specifically, there was an increase in protein energy percentage and a decrease in fat energy percentage in the postoperative period.

Self-Reported Gastrointestinal Symptoms Two To Four Years After Bariatric Surgery. A Cross-Sectional Study Comparing Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Brit Thorsen et al.

Summary: This study compared the severity of GI symptoms, pain, and self-rated health 2 to 4 years after RYGBP and LSG surgery. Patients undergoing RYGBP and LSG surgery reported similar total GSRS scores and low pain scores, while reflux symptoms and use of acid-reducing medication occurred more frequently after LSG surgery, and abdominal pain was more frequent in RYGBP surgery. These findings are important for surgical decision-making and follow-up.

The Need and Safety of Mineral Supplementation in Adults with Obesity Post Bariatric Surgery-Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG)

Agata Wawrzyniak et al.

Summary: The study found that calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, and zinc intake was deficient in both male and female bariatric surgery patients at 3, 6, and 9 months post-surgery. Only 72% of patients took dietary supplements, and some patients did not meet the recommended intake levels for certain minerals. Further personalized mineral supplementation may be necessary for these patients.
