Sex and Permanent Pacemaker Implantation After Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement

Magnus Dalen et al.

Summary: This study investigated sex differences in the rate of permanent pacemaker implantation after surgical aortic valve replacement (AVR). The results showed that in patients aged <60 years, the rate of permanent pacemaker implantation was higher in women than in men. This suggests that young women are more susceptible to conduction disturbances requiring permanent pacemaker implantation after surgical AVR.

Valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation versus repeat surgical aortic valve replacement in patients with a failed aortic bioprosthesis

Monil Majmundar et al.

Summary: This study compared the outcomes of valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation (ViV TAVI) with repeat surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in patients with a failed aortic bioprosthetic valve. The results showed that ViV TAVI was associated with lower in-hospital mortality but higher rates of 30-day and 6-month all-cause readmission compared with repeat SAVR. However, there were no differences in the risk of in-hospital stroke, post-procedure pacemaker implantation, major adverse cardiac events (MACE), and mortality during readmission between the two groups.

Gender Differences in Age-Stratified Inhospital Outcomes After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (from the National Inpatient Sample 2012 to 2018)

Salman Zahid et al.

Summary: This study investigates the gender differences in outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), stratified by age. The results indicate that female patients between the ages of 81 to 90 have higher mortality rates. In addition, females are more likely to experience vascular complications and require blood transfusions across all age groups. On the other hand, males have higher rates of pacemaker implantation and acute kidney injury.

Early outcomes of transcatheter versus surgical aortic valve implantation in patients with bicuspid aortic valve stenosis

Monil Majmundar et al.

Summary: This study compared early outcomes between transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in patients with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) stenosis. In the propensity score-matched cohort, TAVI was associated with reduced odds of in-hospital mortality and a similar risk of 30-day and six-month major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), supporting the feasibility of TAVI in BAV patients without a need for concurrent aortic root repair.

Sex differences in mortality and 90-day readmission rates after transcatheter aortic valve replacement: a nationwide analysis from the USA

Venkata S. Pajjuru et al.

Summary: The study aims to assess gender differences in in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates among patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in the USA. The results showed that both in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates have decreased over time for both genders. However, women still have slightly higher in-hospital mortality and 90-day readmission rates compared to men.

Aortic Valve Replacement in Young and Middle-Aged Adults: Current and Potential Roles of TAVR

Jennifer S. Nelson et al.

Summary: The study analyzed contemporary practice patterns and outcomes for aortic valve replacement (AVR) among young and middle-aged adults, showing an increasing use of transcatheter AVR (TAVR) in this population. Mortality risk was lower with mechanical valves, while congenital morbidity risk was higher with TAVR. Therefore, our data support surgical AVR (SAVR) in this age group.

Sex Differences in In-Hospital Outcomes of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Birendra Amgai et al.

Summary: Among patients undergoing TAVR, women are more likely to experience in-hospital complications and mortality compared to men, with increased risk of cardiac, respiratory, hemorrhagic, neurological, and vascular complications, but lower risk of pacemaker requirement and acute kidney injury. Further studies are needed to understand the discrepancy in in-hospital outcomes between sexes.

Sex-specific in-hospital outcomes of transcatheter aortic valve replacement with third generation transcatheter heart valves

Trevor Simard et al.

Summary: Sex-based differences in in-hospital outcomes persist with third generation transcatheter heart valves for TAVR, with females experiencing higher mortality, complications, longer hospitalizations, higher costs, and lower rates of independent discharge home. Further research is needed to identify effective mitigation strategies for these observed disparities.
