A pilot study of microbial signatures of liver disease in those with HIV mono-infection in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Carolyn Yanavich et al.

Summary: The relationship between the microbiome and liver disease in HIV-infection was examined by analyzing the rectal microbiome. The study found distinct microbial profiles in HIV mono-infected individuals with steatosis or fibrosis, some of which are similar to those associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in HIV-negative populations. Further studies are needed to understand the role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of liver disease in HIV-infected persons.

Metabolism and Metabolic Disorders and the Microbiome: The Intestinal Microbiota Associated With Obesity, Lipid Metabolism, and Metabolic Health-Pathophysiology and Therapeutic Strategies

Judith Aron-Wisnewsky et al.

Summary: Studying the changes in the intestinal microbiome and their relationship with obesity, diabetes, and other metabolic diseases has provided insights into the mechanisms by which alterations in the microbiome contribute to these conditions. Recent research has focused on the effects of the microbiome on lipid metabolism and the development of strategies to modify the microbiome to reverse metabolic alterations. These approaches have shown promise in mouse models of obesity and metabolic disorders and hold potential for translating to human applications to improve metabolic health.

Altered Gut Microbiome under Antiretroviral Therapy: Impact of Efavirenz and Zidovudine

Summary: ART does not reverse the dysbiosis of gut microbiome induced by HIV and may aggravate microbiota alterations due to the antibacterial effect of certain antiretrovirals. Restructuring the microbiota could be a potential therapeutic target in HIV-1 patients under ART.

Liver Fat, Adipose Tissue, and Body Composition Changes After Switching from a Protease Inhibitor or Efavirenz to Raltegravir

Anna Hanttu et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the effects of switching from a protease inhibitor (PI) or efavirenz (EFV) to raltegravir (RAL) on liver fat, body composition, and metabolic parameters. Results showed that despite an increase in body weight and fat mass, there were improvements in adipocyte size, inflammation, and other aspects of fat metabolism.

Association between CD4+ T cell counts and gut microbiota and serum cytokines levels in HIV-infected immunological non-responders

Danfeng Lu et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that lower CD4(+) T cell counts in immunological non-responders (INRs) with HIV infection are associated with reduced abundance of Ruminococcaceae in the gut and elevated serum pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. This suggests that interventions targeting the gut microbiota to increase CD4(+) T cell counts could be a potential strategy for promoting immune reconstitution in HIV-infected INRs.

Dysbiosis of Gut Microbiota in Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction

Ying Han et al.

Summary: This study revealed significant differences in gut microbiota composition between AMI patients and healthy controls, with AMI patients showing lower abundance of Firmicutes and higher abundance of Bacteroidetes. The study also found correlations between specific gut microbiota and clinical characteristics of AMI patients, suggesting potential pathways through which gut flora may influence AMI pathogenesis. Additionally, differences in fecal microflora were observed among subgroups of AMI patients, providing insight into potential functional pathways based on the fecal microfloral composition in AMI patients.

Gut Bacteroides species in health and disease

Hassan Zafar et al.

Summary: The functional diversity of the mammalian intestinal microbiome far exceeds that of the host organism, and microbial genes contribute substantially to the well-being of the host; beneficial gut organisms can also be pathogenic when present in the gut or other locations in the body; Bacteroides metabolize polysaccharides and oligosaccharides, providing nutrition and vitamins to the host and other intestinal microbial residents.
