Bipolar membrane electrodialysis for clean production of L-10-camphorsulfonic acid: From laboratory to industrialization

Junying Yan et al.

Summary: Bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED) was used in this study for cleaner production of L-10-camphorsulfonic acid (L-CSA) to reduce environmental impact. The energy consumption and current efficiency were found to be 2.24-2.70 kWh/kg and 20.89-29.5% under specific conditions. The study elucidated the transport behaviors of large-sized anions and demonstrated the feasibility and sustainability of BMED technique for L-CSA production.

Separation of sodium hydroxide from post-carbonation brines by bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED)

Kyungsun Song et al.

Summary: This study focused on using BMED technology to produce high-concentration NaOH solutions from post-carbonation brine for improved efficiency in mineral carbonation. By adjusting the solution volume ratios, proton leakage through the anionic exchange membrane could be effectively utilized to extract NaOH from brine with high Mg content.

Cation-Driven Increases of CO2 Utilization in a Bipolar Membrane Electrode Assembly for CO2 Electrolysis

Kailun Yang et al.

Summary: By promoting alkali cation (K+) concentrations on the catalyst's surface, this study achieved a 3-fold increase in CO2 reduction selectivity in BPMEA system, reaching a CO Faradaic efficiency of 68%. Compared to anion exchange membrane, the cation-infused bipolar membrane system showed a 5-fold reduction in CO2 loss at similar current densities and exceeded the 50% CO2 utilization mark.

Phospholipid recovery from sweet whey and whey protein concentrate: Use of electrodialysis with bipolar membrane combined with a dilution factor as an ecoefficient method

Melanie Faucher et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis with bipolar membrane (EDBM) shows promise in recovering phospholipids (PLs) from sweet whey and whey protein concentrate (WPC) by promoting lipoprotein complex formation. A 4X dilution appears sufficient to maximize the formation of lipoprotein complexes, and the process can effectively recover PLs, with phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine being the main phospholipids recovered. Sweet whey combined with a 2X or 4X dilution shows the most promising conditions considering their high ecoefficiency scores.
