Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents as green absorbents for hydrophilic VOC elimination

Chun-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are efficient in eliminating hydrophilic VOCs due to their high absorption capacity and favorable gas-to-liquid mass transfer. Among the DESs explored, the one containing thymol and decanoic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio exhibits the highest acetone absorption capacity, showing the key role of hydrogen bonding interaction in achieving superior solubility of acetone in DESs. The absorbed acetone can be easily removed from the DESs, making the process economically and ecologically beneficial for hydrophilic VOC elimination.

Active surface RuOx species originating from size-driving self-dispersion process for toluene catalytic combustion

Guanqun Gao et al.

Summary: Catalytic combustion of aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be effectively achieved using Ru nanoparticles on CeO2 support. In this study, the catalytic performance of Ru nanoparticles with different sizes (1.6, 2.9, and 3.6 nm) for toluene combustion was investigated. The results showed that the catalytic activity improved with decreasing Ru size, which can be attributed to the highest formation degree of coordinatively-unsaturated sites during a self-dispersion process. The smaller Ru nanoparticles contained a higher ratio of active Run+ and oxygen vacancy, leading to a stronger ability to facilitate dehydrogenation and aromatic ring breakage, ultimately enhancing the toluene combustion activity.
