Bait input altered microbial community structure and increased greenhouse gases production in coastal wetland sediment

Genmei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bait input on sediment microbial community, greenhouse gas (GHG) production, and physicochemical properties. The results showed that bait input significantly affected dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and various sediment properties. Additionally, bait input led to changes in microbial community composition and increased GHG production. These findings highlight the importance of coastal aquaculture in global GHG emissions.

Achievements, challenges and global implications of China's carbon neutral pledge

Hong Yang et al.

Summary: China's pledge of carbon neutrality by 2060 is crucial in inspiring global climate action and reducing global warming and air pollution-related premature deaths. It can also encourage other major carbon-emitting countries and nations along the Belt and Road Initiative routes to actively contribute. However, achieving carbon neutrality requires technological breakthroughs, large-scale investments, and strong policies and implementation plans.

Greenhouse gas emissions from fed mollusk mariculture: A case study of a Sinonovacula constricta farming system

Wangwang Ye et al.

Summary: Expanded shellfish mariculture is important for global food security, but it also contributes to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A study on a constricted tagelus farming system found significant emissions of non-CO2 GHGs, such as CH4 and N2O, which account for over 75% of the system's net global warming potential. The farming mode, nutrient loading, and water drainage activities were identified as the main factors contributing to the emissions. Improving the farming mode and reducing water drainage could help mitigate the emissions. Further research should consider non-CO2 GHGs in mariculture.

Assessing nutrient budgets and environmental impacts of coastal land-based aquaculture system in southeastern China

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: Aquaculture can lead to serious environmental pollution in coastal areas. Nutrient budget analysis in land-based aquaculture ponds can help understand the fate of nutrients and aid sustainable management. In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus budgets in shrimp monoculture ponds were analyzed, showing commercial feed as the main input and biomass harvesting and sedimentation as major outputs. Drainage from the ponds contributed to nutrient discharge into the river estuary, and unresolved factors like volatilization and seepage were identified affecting the accuracy of the nutrient budgets.

Four decades of nitrous oxide emission from Chinese aquaculture underscores the urgency and opportunity for climate change mitigation

Yangen Zhou et al.

Summary: The N2O emissions from Chinese aquaculture systems have increased significantly over the past 41 years, with most of the increase coming from freshwater fish farming in Guangdong and Hubei provinces. Choosing low-emission species and improving feed efficiency can help reduce aquaculture N2O emissions for a sustainable and climate-resilient industry.

A review of indirect N2O emission factors from artificial agricultural waters

Jackie R. Webb et al.

Summary: The study examines the role of artificial water bodies as indirect sources of agricultural N2O emissions, highlighting their different responses to N loading and the issue of overestimation in the current IPCC EF model. It calls for more extensive research on N processing in artificial waters and the inclusion of these systems in global N2O budgets.

Coastal reservoirs as a source of nitrous oxide: Spatio-temporal patterns and assessment strategy

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: Coastal reservoirs are seen as a solution to water scarcity in growing coastal cities, but they may also be hotspots for N2O emissions due to human activities. This study in a subtropical coastal reservoir in China found significant spatial and temporal variations in N2O concentration and emission, with nitrification identified as the main microbial pathway for N2O production. The study highlights the need for more sampling points in spatially heterogeneous aquatic systems to accurately estimate N2O emissions.

Methane and nitrous oxide have separated production zones and distinct emission pathways in freshwater aquaculture ponds

Junji Yuan et al.

Summary: Aquaculture ponds are significant sources of methane emissions but weak sources of nitrous oxide. Methane emissions are influenced by temperature, dissolved organic carbon concentration, and redox potential, while nitrous oxide flux is affected by gas transfer velocity. Nitrous oxide is primarily produced in the water column and can diffuse downwards into sediments for consumption.

Spatial-temporal variability of indirect nitrous oxide emissions and emission factors from a subtropical river draining a rice paddy watershed in China

Shuang Wu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a two-year field observation to quantify indirect N2O emissions from a river in subtropical China, highlighting significant seasonal variations in N2O emissions and a strong correlation between indirect N2O emission factors and surface water NO3--N concentrations. The results indicate that the use of IPCC default values may lead to overestimation of indirect N2O emissions from agricultural impacted riverine systems, emphasizing the need for more extensive in-situ measurements to refine global N2O budgets.

GREEN AGRICULTURE AND BLUE WATER IN CHINA: REINTEGRATING CROP AND LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION FOR CLEAN WATER
