Field study on the influence of subsurface drainage pipes and envelopes on discharge and salt leaching in arid areas

Hang Li et al.

Summary: The selection of drainage materials is crucial for the efficient operation of subsurface drainage systems. The results show that treatments using gravel envelopes have higher drainage water amount, with the most significant decrease after 1 year of operation. The interaction between synthetic envelopes and the perforation rate of drainage pipes significantly influences water and salt discharge.

The life cycle assessment of subsurface drainage performance under rice-canola cropping system

Abdullah Darzi-Naftchali et al.

Summary: This study is the first to apply the life cycle assessment (LCA) concept to evaluate the agro-environmental sustainability of subsurface drainage systems under a rice-canola cropping rotation. The results show that the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) system has lower environmental impacts compared to mid-season drainage (MSD). Additionally, the use of LCA as a tool can effectively evaluate the performance of subsurface drainage systems before large-scale implementation.

Improvement in canola yield and growth indices and water-use efficiency with subsurface drainage in a humid climate

Ahmad Asgari et al.

Summary: A 2-year field study in a humid climate in northern Iran found that subsurface drainage systems significantly improved yield and growth indices of winter canola, as well as green water-use efficiency and economic productivity. The results highlighted the importance of appropriate drainage systems and management strategies for preventing adverse effects of waterlogging and increasing land and water productivity.

Evaluating the impacts of saline water irrigation on soil water-salt and summer maize yield in subsurface drainage condition using coupled HYDRUS and EPIC model

Genxiang Feng et al.

Summary: Field experiment combined with numerical simulation was used to evaluate the effects of saline water irrigation on soil water-salt movement, crop growth and water productivity. The appropriate irrigation water salinity was found to be 4.0-4.4 dS m(-1) under subsurface drain depth of 80 cm.

Experiment and numerical simulation for designing layout parameters of subsurface drainage pipes in arid agricultural areas

Yingzhi Qian et al.

Summary: This study determined the pipe layout parameters for water and salt drainage using experimental and numerical methods. It was found that drain depth and spacing are more important for soil desalinization, while pipe diameter is less influential.

Simulating water and salt transport in subsurface pipe drainage systems with HYDRUS-2D

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: The study proposed effective strategies to increase the accuracy of HYDRUS-2D simulations in subsurface pipe drainage (SPD). The RL, AIS, and ER treatments achieved higher simulation accuracy than the standard seepage boundary (SSB) strategy, especially in terms of soil salt and water content. Further research should focus on improving the upper and lower boundary conditions of HYDRUS-2D for better SPD simulation.

Performance Evaluation of Different Combined Drainage Forms on Flooding and Waterlogging Removal

Xiaolei Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different combined drainage forms on farmland drainage in southern China, finding that auxiliary drainage measures can improve drainage efficiency and alleviate flooding and waterlogging. Under stable ponding conditions, the flow rates of combined drainage forms with open ditch and improved subsurface drainage are more effective.
