Heat stress may cause a significant reduction of rice yield in China under future climate scenarios

Qing Sun et al.

Summary: Extreme heat events under climate change seriously threaten rice growth. Existing crop models tend to underestimate the impacts of heat stress on rice yields. This study successfully modeled rice growth under heat stress and improved the accuracy of yield estimates. The future projections indicate a decreasing trend in rice yield, especially in rice-planted regions of China.

Adapting to climate change precisely through cultivars renewal for rice production across China: When, where, and what cultivars will be required?

Liangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Climate change has a significant impact on rice productivity in China, with varying effects among different cultivars. Replacing existing cultivars can only partly mitigate the yield loss caused by climate change in the future. Around 67% of single rice cultivation areas and 46% of double rice cultivation areas will require new cultivars before 2050. The mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze River have only two decades left for adaptation. The ideal traits for breeding cultivars to adapt to climate change include medium growth cycle, long grain-filling period, high photosynthetic capacity, and fewer spikelets.

Designing wheat cultivar adaptation to future climate change across China by coupling biophysical modelling and machine learning

Fulu Tao et al.

Summary: This study developed hybrid assessment models by combining crop models and machine learning algorithms to evaluate the impact of climate change on wheat productivity in China. The results showed that wheat yield is projected to decrease due to climate change, but with the CO2 effect, it may increase. Factors such as solar radiation, precipitation, temperature, cultivar traits, and CO2 are critical for wheat productivity. The study suggests that a significant portion of wheat planting grids would require cultivar renewal before 2050 to adapt to climate change.

Estimation of Global Irrigation Water Use by the Integration of Multiple Satellite Observations

Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive framework to estimate global irrigation water use (IWU) by integrating multiple satellite observations. The results show that the integrated IWU estimate outperforms individual satellite observations, but there is a general underestimation of IWU globally. Further efforts are needed to improve the accuracy of global IWU estimation by producing high-quality and finer spatiotemporal resolution satellite-based products.

Uncertainty in climate change impact studies for irrigated maize cropping systems in southern Spain

Bahareh Kamali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the main drivers of uncertainties in simulated irrigated maize yield under historical conditions as well as scenarios of increased temperatures and altered irrigation water availability. The results show that irrigation strategies are the main driver of uncertainty in simulated yields, but under temperature increase scenarios, the contribution of crop model and cultivar choice to uncertainty in simulated yields are as important as irrigation strategy.

Assessment of nine gridded temperature data for modeling of wheat production systems

Alireza Araghi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify the most appropriate gridded temperature data (GTD) for crop simulation modeling. Results showed that AgCFSR, AgMERRA, PGF, and AgERA5 had the best performance, while NCEP and GLDAS had the weakest performance. AgERA5 can be recommended for temperature-related agricultural simulations for the study area in Iran and similar environmental regions.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of climate change on rice yield and found that rising CO2 and temperature had negative effects, especially towards the end of the century. The findings may be useful for policymakers in developing strategies to improve future rice productivity in Southeastern China.

Impact of climate change and crop management on cotton phenology based on statistical analysis in the main-cotton-planting areas of China

Na Li et al.

Summary: Cotton phenological stages in general showed an advancing trend, while sowing and maturity dates were delayed; precipitation had a significant impact on the lengths of phenological stages, while sunshine duration and temperature had a smaller impact; the influence of climate change on cotton phenology was weaker, and planting longer-duration cotton varieties may be a better choice for adapting to climate change.

Evaluating the impact of projected climate on rice-wheat-groundnut cropping sequence in lower Gangetic plains of India: a study using multiple GCMs, DSSAT model, and long-term sequence analysis

M. A. Sarath Chandran et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of projected climate on a rice-wheat-groundnut cropping sequence in Mohanpur, India, finding that future climate may result in shortened growth periods for rice and wheat but extended growth periods for groundnuts. Under future climate conditions, rice yield is expected to increase, while the magnitude of yield reduction for wheat and groundnuts may decrease.
