Performance of Cooperative Communication System With Multiple Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Over Nakagami-m Fading Channels

Van-Duc Phan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the advantages of multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in wireless systems, specifically in a cooperative communication system combining reflecting links from RISs and a direct link. The performance of the cooperative RIS-D system is analyzed over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels, and it is found that the cooperative RIS-D system has a significantly lower symbol error probability (SEP) compared to a single-input single-output (SISO) system. Furthermore, increasing the number of RISs or the number of reflecting elements in the RISs can greatly reduce the SEP of the cooperative RIS-D system.

Summary: This article proposes an RIS-assisted mmWave point-to-point communication system based on dynamically configured subarray connected hybrid beamforming structures. The joint design of the base station and RIS beamforming matrices is achieved using an energy-efficient analog beamformer and a successive interference cancelation-based method. The proposed dynamic subconnected structure and joint beamforming method strike an attractive tradeoff between bandwidth efficiency and power consumption.

Exploiting Multiple RISs and Direct Link for Performance Enhancement of Wireless Systems With Hardware Impairments

Phuong T. Tran et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the performance of a wireless system that utilizes multiple reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and a direct link between the source node and the mobile user, taking into consideration transceiver hardware impairments (HIs). The outage probability, throughput, achievable data rate, and symbol error probability of the system with and without HIs are derived and compared to a point-to-point link system. Monte-Carlo simulations are used to verify the derived formulas. The results show that the system with HIs outperforms the point-to-point system at low transmit power, while the system without HIs always performs better than the point-to-point system. HIs have a more severe effect at higher data transmission rates or high modulation orders.

Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided Multiuser Millimeter-Wave Systems

Gui Zhou et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel cascaded channel estimation strategy with low pilot overhead for RIS-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output wireless communication systems. The method exploits the sparsity and correlation of multiuser cascaded channels in millimeter-wave MISO systems to address the channel estimation challenge. The proposed strategy estimates the full channel state information in the first coherence block and re-estimates the channel gains in the remaining blocks with lower pilot overhead. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms existing methods in terms of estimation accuracy with the same pilot overhead.
