Hybrid RANS/LES study of tip leakage vortex instability and turbulence characteristics of a transonic turbine cascade

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: A hybrid RANS/LES method is used to study vortex instability and turbulence characteristics near the transonic turbine tip region. Two predominant instability patterns, vortex wandering and breakdown, are successfully identified, and a spiral-type vortex breakdown is observed. The mechanisms of vortex wandering are revealed through analysis of the vorticity transport equation and triple decomposition with the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method. Detailed analysis of the turbulence characteristics, including distributions of Reynolds stress terms and the turbulent kinetic energy, is also conducted.

Flow mechanism of bimodal phenomenon in intermittent corner separation in a linear compressor cascade using a hybrid RANS/LES method

Bingxiao Lu et al.

Summary: A hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model is used to simulate unsteady flow in a linear cascade, clarifying the flow mechanisms of intermittent coherent vortical structures and bimodal phenomenon. The bimodal phenomenon near the separation surface is indicated by the existence of two non-periodic switching flow modes, which are influenced by coherent vortical structures. The indicator Ra can quantitatively evaluate the degree of bimodal phenomenon in flow fields.

Toward neural-network-based large eddy simulation: application to turbulent channel flow

Jonghwan Park et al.

Summary: The study developed a subgrid-scale model using a fully connected neural network and conducted both a priori and a posteriori tests to evaluate its prediction performance. Results showed that while the NN-based SGS model can provide good predictions under certain conditions, it also exhibited stability issues in some cases.

Time-averaging and temporal-filtering in wall-modeled large eddy simulation

H. Hosseinzade et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of different time periods on the performance of wall modeling, finding that shorter time periods can improve the accuracy of predicting flow structures in the wall layer. The selection of time periods based on the location of the matching point further enhances the performance of the wall model.

Direct effects of boundary permeability on turbulent flows: observations from an experimental study using zero-mean-shear turbulence

Mark W. McCorquodale et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigates the interaction of zero-mean-shear turbulence with solid and permeable boundaries. It examines the influence of wall permeability on turbulent energy transfer and intercomponent energy transfer, showing that the mechanisms are inhibited as the permeability Reynolds number increases.

Effect of Reynolds number on turbulent boundary layer approaching separation

Artur Drozdz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of Reynolds number on turbulent boundary layer under adverse pressure gradient, revealing that the separation point shifts downstream with increasing Reynolds number due to increased convection velocity close to the wall. Further detailed studies showed that this phenomenon can be attributed to enhanced large- and small-scale interactions.

Wall model based on neural networks for LES of turbulent flows over periodic hills

Zhideng Zhou et al.

Summary: A data-driven wall model for turbulent flows over periodic hills is developed using feedforward neural network (FNN) and wall-resolved large-eddy simulation (WRLES) data. The FNN predictions show good agreement with WRLES data for the wall shear stresses, but some discrepancies are observed near the crest of the hill. Overall, the correlation coefficients between FNN predictions and WRLES predictions are larger than 0.7 at most streamwise locations.

Stochastic forcing for sub-grid scale models in wall-modeled large-eddy simulation

S. Blanchard et al.

Summary: In the framework of wall-modeled large-eddy simulation (WMLES), the static Smagorinsky model predicts efficiently the wall shear stress, while more advanced static models like WALE or Sigma fail in this aspect. Smagorinsky is known to be too dissipative in the bulk flow and purely sheared flows, whereas the other models are better suited for near-wall flows.
