Acoustic nonlinearities in a quasi 1-D duct with arbitrary mean properties and mean flow

Sattik Basu et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear temporal dynamics of acoustic oscillations in a quasi one-dimensional duct were investigated using both numerical and analytical methods. A spatiotemporal nonlinear wave equation was derived for pressure oscillations in a duct with axially varying cross-section and spatially inhomogeneous mean properties. The linear Helmholtz equation was solved using finite element method, and the standard Galerkin method was applied to transform the wave equation into a second-order nonlinear ordinary differential equation governing the time evolution of modal amplitudes. The Lindstedt-Poincare perturbation method was used to quantify the limit-cycle amplitude and frequency of pressure oscillations. The numerical and analytical results showed excellent agreement.

Large eddy simulations of spray combustion instability in an aero-engine combustor at elevated temperature and pressure

Yuzhou Cheng et al.

Summary: Large eddy simulations were used to investigate the mechanisms of self-excited spray combustion instability in an aero-engine combustor. The study found that combustion instability is mainly caused by thermo-acoustic interaction, with the formation and annihilation of burning pockets driving the instability. Initial droplet diameter and wall boundary condition have significant effects on the oscillation amplitudes of the instability.

Analytical solutions for the three-dimensional acoustic field in a rectangular duct with temperature gradient and mean flow

Jiaqi Nan et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop analytical solutions for the three-dimensional transverse acoustic field within rectangular ducts with mean temperature distribution and bulk flow. By combining an adapted WKB approximation method and the separation of variables, three-dimensional analytical solutions independent of the temperature distribution assumptions are obtained. Validations of these solutions show that they can accurately predict the transverse acoustic field for sufficiently large frequencies.

Acoustic absorption and generation in ducts of smoothly varying area sustaining a mean flow and a mean temperature gradient

Saikumar R. Yeddula et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the acoustic energy change in ducts with varying cross-sectional area using the acoustic absorption coefficient Delta. The model predictions of Delta were validated and showed stronger dependence on the mean temperature gradient than area gradient variation. Furthermore, a crucial finding was that a positive mean temperature gradient caused acoustic energy absorption while a negative gradient caused energy generation, influencing the acoustic energy balance.

Analysis of acoustic, entropy and vorticity waves in a non-uniform annular combustor

Lijun Yang et al.

Summary: Annular ducts with axial cross-sectional surface area gradient are typical elements in aero-engines and land-use gas turbines. Acoustic, entropy and vorticity waves propagating in these regions are generally coupled and may affect the thermoacoustic instabilities. This work presents two asymptotic methods to isolate the acoustic, entropy and vorticity waves coupled in these kinds of annular ducts.

Analytical solutions of acoustic field in annular combustion chambers with non-uniform cross-sectional surface area and mean flow

Jingxuan Li et al.

Summary: This study derives analytical solutions for the acoustic field in annular combustion chambers, considering varying cross-sectional surface area and average radius while maintaining mean flow. The accuracy of these solutions is validated using a modified WKB approximation method, showing that accurate predictions can be obtained for smooth changes in cross-sectional surface area and small-to-moderate subsonic axial Mach numbers with frequencies above a certain value.
