A review on buildings energy information: Trends, end-uses, fuels and drivers

M. Gonzalez-Torres et al.

Summary: Buildings contribute significantly to climate change, but there is a lack of reliable and consistent data for the development and evaluation of mitigation policies. Residential buildings have the highest energy consumption, with HVAC systems being the main source. Electrification has the potential to mitigate climate change if renewable power is promoted, but global cooperation is needed to break the link between economic growth, urbanization, and energy consumption in developing nations.

Evolution of spray and aerosol from respiratory releases: theoretical estimates for insight on viral transmission

P. M. de Oliveira et al.

Summary: By modeling the evaporation and settling of droplets emitted during respiratory releases, this study found that aerosols generated by continuous speaking have a higher suspended viral dose, making physical distancing alone insufficient for safety, while ventilation can reduce the risk of infection.

Airflows inside passenger cars and implications for airborne disease transmission

Varghese Mathai et al.

Summary: This study uses numerical simulations to evaluate the potential spread of pathogenic species between car occupants and finds that airflow patterns across the cabin may reduce transmission risk. The research also reveals the complexity of fluid dynamics during everyday commutes and how open windows can affect airborne transmission in nonintuitive ways.

Modeling turbulent transport of aerosols inside rooms using eddy diffusivity

Akula Venkatram et al.

Summary: This paper examines the applicability of the eddy diffusivity/gradient model for modeling dispersion of pollutants in confined spaces, and validates its effectiveness through re-analysis of data. The study found that the gradient transport model provides adequate descriptions of concentration measurements and allows for a detailed examination of the relationship between ventilation rate and material dose associated with aerosol releases. It also concludes with implications on mitigating exposure to aerosols such as airborne virus or bacteria.
