Novel variable reconstruction and friction term discretisation schemes for hydrodynamic modelling of overland flow and surface water flooding

Jiaheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Due to advances in computing and data acquisition technologies, numerical models are widely used to predict overland flow and surface water flooding in natural catchments. Correct discretisation of source terms is essential for accurate and stable numerical solutions. This study introduces new schemes to reconstruct flow variables and improves an implicit algorithm to discretise friction terms, aiming to develop a hydrodynamic model for accurate simulation of very shallow water depth flooding.

Second-order discontinuous Galerkin flood model: Comparison with industry-standard finite volume models

Janice Lynn Ayog et al.

Summary: Finite volume numerical solvers are crucial for flood modeling, but the second-order Discontinuous Galerkin (DG2) method is a potentially better alternative yet under-studied. This paper compares a robust DG2 flood model to prominent FV-based models, finding that the DG2 variant without local limiting shows closer predictions to commercial models with faster simulation speeds.

LISFLOOD-FP 8.0: the new discontinuous Galerkin shallow-water solver for multi-core CPUs and GPUs

James Shaw et al.

Summary: LISFLOOD-FP 8.0 introduces new two-dimensional solvers for modelling a wide range of flows, including rapidly propagating, supercritical flows, and shock waves. These solvers are parallelized on multicore CPU and Nvidia GPU architectures and have been studied for their predictive capabilities and computational efficiency through benchmark tests and real-world flood simulations.
