Discriminative ionic polarizability of alkali halide solutions: Hydration cells, bond distortion, surface stress, and viscosity

Lei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of individual ions in salt solutions and the impact of ionic hydration on hydrogen bonding network distortion, surface stress, and solution viscosity. The findings reveal that ions occupy the interstitial space of water eccentrically to form hydration cells, and the polarization of ions affects the length and stiffness of H-O bonds. Furthermore, the screening effect of hydrating water dipoles limits the size of cation hydration cells, while inter-anion repulsion reduces the hydration volume. The polarization of cations and anions contributes to the linear and nonlinear components of viscosity and surface stress.

Local Ice-like Structure at the Liquid Water Surface

Nathan L. Odendahl et al.

Summary: Experiments and simulations have shown that liquid water's surfaces can exhibit similar structural features to crystalline ice surfaces. These findings deepen our understanding of ice-like structures at the liquid's boundary and suggest the presence of quasi-ice layers at the surface of liquid water above the melting point.

The Structure of Water in Silica Mesopores - Influence of the Pore Wall Polarity

Christian Weinberger et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of pore wall polarity on the structure of water in mesoporous materials through experimental and theoretical approaches. The results demonstrate that changing the pore wall polarity leads to different structures of water. Additionally, a novel calculation method using surface-specific sum-frequency generation is applied to gain theoretical insight into the water's structure.

Energy absorbancy and freezing-temperature tunability of NaCl solutions during ice formation

Yanjun Shen et al.

Summary: The formation of the supersolid phase during NaCI solution ice formation is related to the effect of ionic polarization, which shortens and stiffens the H-O bond while weakening the O:H non-bonding interactions. The supersolid phase exhibits gel-like properties, low density, and viscoelasticity, influencing the T-N and energy absorption of the solution.

Temperature induced dynamics of water confined between graphene and MoS2

P. Bampoulis

Summary: Water trapped between MoS2 and graphene forms ice and water droplets with unique geometric shapes. Changes in temperature affect the size and disappearance of ice crystals, while water droplets undergo changes in density, size, and shape at 100 degrees Celsius. The dewetting dynamics are controlled by the graphene cover, with thicker graphene flakes allowing faster water diffusion.

Unique water H-bonding types on metal surfaces: from the bonding nature to cooperativity rules

Jibiao Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the nature of H-bonding interactions is essential in modern sciences. Using density functional theory calculations, two unique H-bonding types were identified on close-packed metal surfaces, showing contrasting features to conventional H-bonds in liquid water and water ices. A trade-off-like cooperativity law and oxygen backbone cooperativity rule were discovered, revealing divergent trends and competitive variations in the electrostatic and Pauli repulsion strengths. This knowledge expands understanding of H-bonding interactions and has implications for manipulating H-bonds at electronic levels and resolving cooperative H-bonding nature in different aqueous systems.

Elastic ice microfibers

Peizhen Xu et al.

Summary: Ice grown as single-crystal ice microfibers (IMFs) exhibits high elasticity and can be reversibly bent at low temperatures. A pressure-induced phase transition of ice from Ih to II was observed on the compressive side of sharply bent IMFs. The high optical quality of these flexible ice fibers opens up opportunities for low-loss optical waveguiding and whispering-gallery-mode resonance.

Biomimetic artificial water channel membranes for enhanced desalination

Maria Di Vincenzo et al.

Summary: Inspired by biological proteins, artificial water channels (AWCs) can enhance the performance of traditional desalination membranes, providing a more efficient method for selective water transport in seawater desalination. By incorporating AWCs in composite polyamide, these biomimetic membranes exhibit high water-to-salt permeability under high pressure, suitable for seawater desalination, with a rejection rate of 99.5% for NaCl or 91.4% for boron.
