Deciphering the atomic-scale structural origin for large dynamic electromechanical response in lead-free Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-based relaxor ferroelectrics

Jie Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the atomic-scale structure of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3-based system and its relationship to the polar structure evolution and large dynamic electromechanical response. It is found that increased defect concentration is the main driving force for deviating polarizations with high-angle walls, while the driving force for deviating polarizations with low-angle walls changes. The competitive and synergetic equilibrium of anisotropic field versus random field contributes to the giant electromechanical response.

Lamellar-like nanostructure in a relaxor ferroelectrics Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

Yukio Sato et al.

Summary: The nanostructure of relaxor ferroelectric materials, including the presence of lamellar-like nanostructures and their relationship with polar nanostructures, polar order, and electric field, is complex and requires further investigation. The formation of lamellar-like structures in pure PMN was found to precede the formation of larger-scale polar order in relaxor ferroelectrics, indicating a potential new mechanism for understanding the material's physical properties.

A-site cation off-centering contribution on ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity in pseudo-cubic perovskite structure of Bi-based lead-free piezoelectrics

Sangwook Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the origin of significantly large piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity in 0.67BiFeO(3)-0.33BaTiO(3) ceramics. It was found that despite a small lattice distortion at 300K, the material still exhibited significant piezoelectric properties, attributed to the off-centering of Bi ions. The off-centered Bi ions are believed to contribute to the ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity in a non-centrosymmetric structure with a small lattice distortion.

Nanoscale bubble domains with polar topologies in bulk ferroelectrics

Jie Yin et al.

Summary: The authors demonstrate the achievement of self-confined bubble domains with multiple polar topologies, especially skyrmions, in bulk Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 ferroelectrics. The phenomenon is driven by the interplay of bulk, elastic, and electrostatic energies of coexisting modulated phases. This leads to reversible and donut-like domain morphology evolution in the material.
