Differentiating Defects and Their Influence on Hematite Photoanodes Using X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy and Raman Microscopy

Yutong Liu et al.

Summary: The highly variable behavior and performance of hematite as photoanodes for the oxygen evolution reaction highlight the importance of understanding the interplay between defects and photoelectrochemical performance. By analyzing the structure-property relationship of hematite samples synthesized under different environments, it was found that different defects, namely oxygen vacancies and iron vacancies, affect the photoelectrochemical performance. These defects cause structural distortions that can be observed using Raman spectroscopy.

Transparency and Morphology Control of Cu2O Photocathodes via an in Situ Electroconversion

Marina Caretti et al.

Summary: This study presents a new method for the fabrication of thin and homogeneous Cu2O films, which are used as photocathodes in photoelectrochemical water splitting cells. By in situ electroconversion of CuSCN, Cu2O films with controlled morphology were obtained. The results demonstrate that these Cu2O films exhibit promising performance for solar-driven hydrogen production.

Anisotropic optical properties of indium tin oxide thin films prepared by ion beam sputtering under oblique angle deposition

Simon Hurand et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the anisotropic optical properties of nanometer-scale structured thin films by combining Mueller matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The study finds that, in the visible-near infrared range, the films exhibit a ripple-like structure with higher optical index perpendicular to the slanting plane. In the infrared range, the films deposited with xenon show strong optical anisotropy due to the anisotropic free-carrier scattering within the nanoscopic sub-columnar structure.
