Engineering VO-Ti ensemble to boost the activity of Ru towards water dissociation for catalytic hydrogen generation

Ruofan Shen et al.

Summary: This study established an oxygen vacancy (VO)-Ti ensemble engineering on a Ru catalyst to enhance the catalytic activity of water dissociation. The VO in the VO-Ti ensemble acts as an electron promoter, transferring electrons to the surface Ru atoms. Experimental results showed that the turnover frequency of 1.5-RTVO-4 in ammonia borane hydrolysis exceeded the benchmark value set by Ru-based catalysts. This research provides a new electronic tuning strategy for enhancing the catalytic activity of metal catalysts towards inert molecule dissociation in the next generation energy chemistry field.

Unraveling the Synergistic Effect of Heteroatomic Substitution andVacancy Engineering in CoFe2O4for Superior Electrocatalysis Performance

Jing Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, CoFe2O4-based hollow nanospheres with outstanding oxygen evolution reaction activity were prepared by Cr3+ substitution and S2-exchange. Cr3+ can be precisely doped into octahedral Fe sites and simultaneously induce Co vacancy, activating adjacent tetrahedral Fe3+. S2-exchange results in structuredistortion of tetrahedral Fe due to compressive strain effect, enhancing the adsorption of *OOH. The Co vacancy and S2-exchange can adjust the geometric and electronic structure of tetrahedral Fe, improving the electrochemical performance.

Extra storage capacity in transition metal oxide lithium-ion batteries revealed by in situ magnetometry

Qiang Li et al.

Summary: Although some transition metal oxide-based electrodes exhibit high storage capacities beyond theoretical values, the surface capacitance on metal nanoparticles involving spin-polarized electrons is consistent with a space charge mechanism. The phenomenon of anomalously high storage capacities in different metal oxides is still under debate, but in situ magnetometry has shown that surface capacitance plays a dominant role in providing extra capacity. This space charge mechanism can be generalized to a broad range of transition metal compounds, providing guidance for advanced energy storage systems.

Engineering Crystallinity and Oxygen Vacancies of Co(II) Oxide Nanosheets for High Performance and Robust Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

Yuhui Tian et al.

Summary: This study combines comprehensive characterizations and density functional theory calculations to investigate the roles of crystallinity and oxygen vacancy levels in Co(II) oxide on ORR and OER activities. The conversion of Co(OH)(2) into oxygen-defective amorphous-crystalline CoO nanosheets with controlled crystallinity and oxygen vacancy levels leads to significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activities. The introduction of amorphous structures and oxygen vacancies in the ODAC-CoO material proves to be an effective strategy for achieving high-performance electrocatalytic ORR and OER processes.

Revealing the Dynamics and Roles of Iron Incorporation in Nickel Hydroxide Water Oxidation Catalysts

Chunguang Kuai et al.

Summary: The study shows a strong correlation between iron incorporation and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with iron absorption rate being significantly higher at high working potentials and favoring electrochemically more reactive edge sites. Iron incorporation can suppress the oxidation of Ni and enhance the Ni reducibility, leading to improved OER catalytic activity. This provides a holistic approach to understanding and controlling catalytic processes by tailoring Fe incorporation dynamics across the electrocatalyst-electrolyte interface.

Engineering High-Spin State Cobalt Cations in Spinel Zinc Cobalt Oxide for Spin Channel Propagation and Active Site Enhancement in Water Oxidation

Yuanmiao Sun et al.

Summary: Through density functional theory calculations, it was found that the OER activity of spinel zinc cobalt oxide is hindered by the presence of low-spin state cobalt cations, but increasing the spin state of cobalt cations can promote spin-selected charge transport and enhance active sites for intermediate adsorption. By controlling the calcination temperature to achieve high-spin state cobalt cations in ZnCo2O4, the catalytic activity was successfully optimized.
