Probing Atomic-Scale Fracture of Grain Boundaries in Low-symmetry 2D Materials

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: By combining aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density functional theory calculations, this study investigated the fracture mechanics of 2D rhenium disulfide, revealing distinctive crack behaviors at different grain boundaries. The results show that grain boundaries aligned with Re chains are more prone to brittle intergranular fracture, while those not aligned with Re chains exhibit high resistance to fracture, impeding crack propagation. These findings provide new insights for material reinforcement and controllable cutting through grain boundary engineering.

Realizing the Intrinsic Anisotropic Growth of 1T′ ReS2 on Selected Au(101) Substrate toward Large-Scale Single Crystal Fabrication

Xiaobo Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the orientation-controlled synthesis of the low-symmetry 2D material ReS2 for the first time through interface engineering based on the strong interaction between the material and Au substrates with different symmetries. The results show that the lattice orientation and growth behavior of ReS2 are closely relevant to the lattice symmetry of Au facets, and the critical factor for achieving its intrinsic anisotropic growth is the synergy of ultra-strong ReS2-Au interfacial coupling and reduction of symmetry of Au facet.

Stacking-engineered ferroelectricity in bilayer boron nitride

Kenji Yasuda et al.

Summary: In this research, ferroelectricity is achieved in two-dimensional boron nitride through van der Waals assembly, demonstrating the phenomenon that polarization can be changed by twisting the angle. This discovery paves the way for potential applications in ultrathin nonvolatile memory, while maintaining the high mobility of graphene.

Fluorination activates the basal plane HER activity of ReS2: a combined experimental and theoretical study

Yonggang Liu et al.

Summary: The hierarchical structure of fluorinated ReS2 assembled as ultrathin nanosheets exhibits excellent HER activity, attributed to the increased in-plane active sites and accelerated charge transfer kinetics. The optimal sample of ReS2-F-5.93 shows low overpotential, Tafel slope, and improved stability, suggesting potential for designing efficient HER electrocatalysts.
