Probing Vibrational Strong Coupling of Molecules with Wavelength-Modulated Raman Spectroscopy

Kishan S. Menghrajani et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy is a powerful technique for fingerprinting materials and molecules, but fluorescence interference is a common issue. Wavelength-modulated Raman spectroscopy can reduce fluorescence background, allowing clear recording of desired Raman signals. While studying vibrational strong coupling, advantages of the wavelength-modulated Raman approach are found, but results on strong coupling remain inconclusive, calling for further research.

Chasing Vibro-Polariton Fingerprints in Infrared and Raman Spectra Using Surface Lattice Resonances on Extended Metasurfaces

Francesco Verdelli et al.

Summary: This study investigates vibrational strong coupling of C-O bonds in poly(methyl methacrylate) to surface lattice resonances (SLRs) on gold particle arrays in infrared and Raman spectra. While evidence of strong coupling was seen in IR transmission spectra, it was not observed in Raman spectroscopy. Further research may be needed to find vibrational strong coupling in Raman spectra, possibly requiring alternative cavity designs or experimental approaches.

Raman Scattering under Strong Vibration-Cavity Coupling

Wonmi Ahn et al.

Summary: This study explores the Raman scattering response of a PMMA carbonyl band under vibrational strong coupling in a Fabry-Perot cavity, revealing features such as softening and a small dip near the fundamental vibrational frequency. These effects are attributed to upper and lower polaritons dispersing over the collection angle, as confirmed by control measurements and modeling.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption by Plasmon Polaritons in Three-Dimensional Nanoparticle Supercrystals

Niclas S. Mueller et al.

Summary: Research shows that plasmonic supercrystals, with a high density of hotspots, are an excellent platform for enhancing vibrational spectra by increasing the cross section of Raman scattering and infrared absorption. The study demonstrates that the intensity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering inside the crystal is uniform and predictable, with supercrystal polaritons inducing resonances in the enhanced cross section for both Raman scattering and infrared absorption. The enhancement of infrared absorption within supercrystals is attributed to the combined effects of hotspot formation and the excitation of standing polariton waves.

Energy-resolved plasmonic chemistry in individual nanoreactors

Eitan Oksenberg et al.

Summary: By monitoring the interfacial environment of a thousand single nanocavities with slightly varied resonance energies, an effective absorption spectrum of metal-bound molecules and a rich plasmon-driven chemistry landscape was constructed. The unavoidable energy losses associated with metals can carry valuable information on energy transfer to the adsorbed molecules. Using methylene blue as a model system, shifts in the absorption spectrum of molecules following surface adsorption were measured, revealing a rich plasmon-driven reactivity landscape with distinct reaction pathways occurring in separate resonance energy windows.

Detecting mid-infrared light by molecular frequency upconversion in dual-wavelength nanoantennas

Angelos Xomalis et al.

Summary: Optomechanical interactions enable coherent interconversion of signals between optical and mechanical domains. Extreme light-matter coupling at nanoscale mode volumes allows single mid-infrared (MIR) photon sensitivity. This study demonstrates frequency upconversion by utilizing infrared absorption and Raman activity of molecular vibrations in plasmonic nanocavities, showing potential for low-cost and large-scale infrared detectors and spectroscopic techniques.

Advances of surface-enhanced Raman and IR spectroscopies: from nano/microstructures to macro-optical design

Hai-Long Wang et al.

Summary: Raman and infrared spectroscopy have low detection sensitivity, but advancements have been made through the development of optical systems, nanostructure-based techniques, and their coupling for maximizing detection sensitivity. Plasmonics, interactions with nano/microstructures, and coupling effects have been studied to increase surface sensitivity. The focus is on systematically designing macro-optical systems to maximize excitation efficiency and detection sensitivity, with advancements in scanning-probe microscopy-based nanoscale spectroscopy. Prospects include emerging techniques and methodologies for further developments in the field.
