Sliding Mechanism for Release of Superlight Objects from Micropatterned Adhesives

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: Robotic handling and transfer printing of micrometer-sized superlight objects is a crucial technology in industrial fabrication. The experiments demonstrated the reliable release of superlight objects using slanted deformable polymer microstructures. The analysis of forces and moments at the tip of the microstructure led to an expression for the pull-off force and provided guidance for optimized design.

Dynamically Tunable Dry Adhesion through a Subsurface Thin Layer with Tunable Stiffness

Amir Mohammadi Nasab et al.

Summary: A novel concept of dynamically tunable dry adhesion via subsurface stiffness modulation has been proposed. The performance of the adhesion has been significantly improved by introducing a variant form of the composite core-shell design. The experiments show that the adhesion strength can be reduced up to 50% when the low melting point alloy is melted. Additionally, two technology demonstrations of fast activation and low activation voltages in picking and releasing objects are included.

Mechanically switchable micro-patterned adhesive for soft material applications

Karl Johannes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adhesion modulation of an elastomeric micro-patterned surface with both rigid and soft materials by applying equibiaxial tensile strain. Experimental results show that the applied strain substantially influences the adhesion behavior of the surface with both types of probes, with a different underlying mechanism for each.

A Design Strategy for Mushroom-Shaped Microfibrils With Optimized Dry Adhesion: Experiments and Finite Element Analyses

Xuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Enhanced dry adhesion of micropatterned polymeric surfaces has been demonstrated through experiments and numerical simulations on single polyurethane mushroom-shaped fibrils, revealing that the geometry of the mushroom cap strongly affects interfacial crack behavior and pull-off stress. Optimal adhesion was found to be accompanied by the appearance of both edge and interior interfacial cracks during separation, leading to the establishment of an optimal design for mushroom-shaped fibrils based on the stalk diameter and Young's modulus.

Chenglong Li et al.

Summary: The magnetically driven non-contact transfer printing technique reported in this study is based on a bi-stable elastomeric stamp, featuring adhesive blocks, a magnetic-response film, and a cavity. The magnetic-response film can be controlled to switch from strong adhesion for reliable pick-up to weak adhesion for easy printing, allowing the printing of inks onto arbitrary receivers. This technique demonstrates robust capabilities in manipulating a wide range of materials and has great potential for deterministic assembly in applications requiring the integration of diverse materials.
