Chiral Ligand-Driven Systematic Synthesis of Coordination Polymers with Non-centrosymmetric Structures

Yunseung Kuk et al.

Summary: Chirality is an important concept in chemistry, with unique optical and nonlinear optical properties. This article reviews a series of recently discovered non-centrosymmetric coordination polymers obtained using carefully designed chiral organic ligands. These polymers exhibit both polar and nonpolar structures, with interesting optical properties such as second-harmonic generation.

Ultrawide Bandgap and Outstanding Second-Harmonic Generation Response by a Fluorine-Enrichment Strategy at a Transition-Metal Oxyfluoride Nonlinear Optical Material

Tianhui Wu et al.

Summary: This study successfully constructed a non-centrosymmetric nonlinear optical material KNOF, with an extremely high F/O ratio, exhibiting an extremely wide band gap and a strong SHG response, as well as sufficient birefringence for applications. The dominant roles of partially fluorinated and totally fluorinated clusters in achieving an enlarged band gap in KNOF have been clarified by first-principles calculations.

Cs2Bi2OSi2O7: A Promising Bismuth Silicate Nonlinear Optical Crystal with Face-Sharing BiO5 Polyhedra Exhibiting Strengthened Second Harmonic Generation Response and Birefringence

Wenli Zhao et al.

Summary: In recent years, nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals have attracted considerable interest due to their frequency conversion properties and versatile optoelectronic applications. This study successfully synthesized a new NLO bismuth silicate crystal, Cs2Bi2OSi2O7 (CBSO), which exhibits superior overall performance and meets the precedent conditions for NLO applications. Furthermore, first-principles calculations were conducted to elucidate the structure-property relationship of CBSO. These findings provide important insights for designing novel second harmonic generation (SHG) active compounds in strongly covalent systems.

Enhancement of Birefringence in Borophosphate Pushing Phase-Matching into the Short-Wavelength Region

Wenbin Zhang et al.

Summary: Borophosphates are widely studied for their short ultraviolet cutoff edge, but their weak polarizability anisotropy hinders their application in the ultraviolet and deep-UV regions. This study successfully synthesized seven borophosphates with improved birefringence by introducing birefringent functional groups. Among them, Rb3B8PO16 exhibited promising UV non-linear optical properties and KB6PO10(OH)4 showed excellent birefringence in the deep-UV region.

Sr2Nb6O13F8•4H2O and Sr3Nb2O2F12•2H2O: A Variant of Three-Dimensional Tungsten Bronze and a Polar Molecular Oxide Fluoride

Euna Ko et al.

Summary: Two strontium niobium oxyfluorides crystals have been successfully grown via hydrothermal reactions, showing unique structures with different niobium and strontium oxyfluoride groups. The band gaps of the crystals were calculated to be approximately 3.22 and 4.11 eV, and a phase transition from one crystal to another was observed under hydrothermal conditions.

Summary: Four chiral coordination polymers were synthesized with the aid of a newly designed chiral ligand under hydrothermal conditions. These polymers exhibit strong second-harmonic generation efficiency, which is attributed to the polarizable metal cations and synergistic effect in the donor-acceptor system.

Enhanced birefringence and suppressed second harmonic generation response mechanism in nonlinear optical materials via structural fine-tuning

Fuming Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the fluorooxo-functional units BOxF4-x (x = 2, 3) can enhance birefringence, but as the crystal structure volume decreases, the second harmonic generation (SHG) response tends to decrease. The offset arrangement of BO2F2 and BO3F under pressure is the main reason for the reduced SHG response.
