Critical role of subgrain orientation on the stability of mechanical properties of selective laser melting manufactured alloys

Yanan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that the orientation of columnar grains is determined by the growth direction of subgrains within them. The difference in deformation between grains with the 001 orientation and other orientations is an important factor that affects the stability of mechanical properties in SLM manufactured alloys.

Microstructure and enhanced tensile properties of AlCoxCrFeNi high entropy alloys with high Co content fabricated by laser melting deposition

Senlin Zhao et al.

Summary: AlCoxCrFeNi high entropy alloys were prepared by laser melting deposition and their tensile properties were investigated. The addition of Co element promoted the phase transformation and enhanced the plasticity of the alloy. Increasing the Co content also led to the formation of fine needle-like phases. This study demonstrates the potential for improving the tensile properties of AlCoCrFeNi alloys by increasing the Co content.

The simultaneous improvements of strength and ductility in additive manufactured Ni-based superalloy via controlling cellular subgrain microstructure

Yanan Zhao et al.

Summary: Fine cellular subgrain structure can be formed during Selective Laser Melting (SLM) manufacturing of IN718 alloy, and it can improve the mechanical properties by promoting the precipitation of γ'' second phase nanoparticles. The reserved cellular subgrain structure in the homogenized samples can hinder dislocation motion, leading to increased strength and ductility of the final prepared alloy, exceeding the mechanical properties standards of wrought IN718 alloy.

Low energy atomic traps sluggardize the diffusion in compositionally complex refractory alloys

Ankit Roy et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the atomic diffusion rate in complex alloys is slower than in pure metals, with higher activation energies. Strong attraction between unlike atomic pairs and the presence of low-energy atomic traps significantly hinder atom migration at high temperatures, reducing creep strain rates.
