Efficient catalytic system for converting N-acetyl-D-glucosamine into valuable chemical 3-acetylamino-5-acetylfuran

Yannan Du et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the designing of catalytic systems for the conversion of chitin biomass monomer N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG) to 3-acetylamino-5-acetylfuran. Among the twelve catalysts studied, pyrazine hydrochloride ([Pyz]Cl) ionic liquid exhibited the best performance with a yield of 36.94% for 3A5AF from NAG. By further optimizing the reaction conditions and adding boric acid and CaCl2, the conversion rate of NAG reached 100% and the yield of 3A5AF in DMA increased to 69.54%. The reaction process was characterized using FTIR, HPLC-MS, and C-13 NMR, and the reactive intermediate was clearly detected. The results provide a mild and efficient reaction route for the degradation of biomass, and contribute to the theoretical research on quaternary amine catalysts in the conversion of biomass waste into high value-added chemicals.

Evaluation of Proton-Induced DNA Damage in 3D-Engineered Glioblastoma Microenvironments

Qais Akolawala et al.

Summary: A novel 3D-engineered scaffold inspired by the geometry of brain blood vessels was designed to assess the effects of proton therapy on glioblastoma (GBM) cells. The results showed a higher DNA double-strand breakage in 3D-cultured cells compared to 2D cell monolayers, indicating potential differences in radioresistance of GBM cells between different culture configurations. These biomimetic-engineered 3D scaffolds provide a benchmark tool for evaluating the effects of proton therapy on 3D GBM cell networks and other types of cancer cells.

3D-Printed Micro Lens-in-Lens for In Vivo Multimodal Microendoscopy

Jiawen Li et al.

Summary: Multimodal microendoscopes enable simultaneous structural and molecular measurements in vivo, providing valuable insights into pathological changes associated with diseases. However, different optical imaging modalities have conflicting requirements for lens design, posing a challenge for the fabrication of miniaturized imaging probes. This study demonstrates an optical design using two-photon 3D printing to create a miniaturized lens that is optimized for both fluorescence and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. The lens-in-lens design shows significant improvement in fluorescence sensitivity compared to conventional fiber-optic design approaches, and is successfully integrated into an intravascular catheter probe for simultaneous OCT and fluorescence imaging of a mouse artery in vivo.

Summary: This study presents a method for identifying different coherent light transport mechanisms using time and spatially resolved coherent light scattering spectroscopy. The results show that about 20% of the scattered light in ultrathin brilliant scattering media originates from weakly localized random photonic modes, rather than solely diffusive light transport.

Summary: This study focuses on enhancing the performance of thermosets by combining photo- and thermal polymerization, using renewable resources instead of petroleum-based materials. By studying thiol-epoxy reactions and examining rheological properties, the most suitable formulations for laser direct writing were selected. The dual cured thermosets showed higher rigidity, tensile strength, and thermal stability, demonstrating their potential for high-resolution 3D printing.
