Sand fly bioecological aspects and risk mapping of leishmaniasis by geographical information systems approach in a mineral exploration area of Brazil

Summary: Mining activities in Brazil, such as limestone mining in the municipality of Pains, can have significant impacts on the environment and pose risks for the transmission of leishmaniasis. This study used epidemiological and ecological approaches to map areas of potential transmission risks within the municipality. It found that sand flies, the vector for leishmaniasis, were distributed throughout the urban area, with higher abundances observed at sampling points near the border. This may be attributed to environmental degradation caused by limestone mining. Integrated and multidisciplinary research is needed to understand the influence of environmental change on insect vectors of leishmaniasis.

The sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) fauna of the urban area of Lassance, Northeast Minas Gerais, Brazil

Summary: This study aimed to investigate sand flies fauna, detect Leishmania DNA, and determine risk areas in Lassance, Brazil. The most abundant species were Lutzomyia longipalpis and Nyssomyia intermedia, with an infection rate of 2.81% in Lu. longipalpis. A risk area map highlighted sample point 6 due to high abundance of sand flies.
