Summary: This study presents the nonlinear bending analysis of elastic tubes made of functionally graded porous material using modified couple stress theory. The analysis considers simply supported and clamped boundary conditions, transverse pressure load, and uniform temperature field. The results demonstrate the size-dependent nonlinear bending responses of the tubes on nonlinear elastic foundation.

Exact closed-form solutions for nonlocal beams with loading discontinuities

Andrea Caporale et al.

Summary: A novel mathematical formulation is presented for the application of stress-driven nonlocal theory of elasticity to engineering nano-scale problems. The proposed method provides a differential formulation and novel constitutive continuity conditions for determining exact closed-form solutions for nonlocal Euler-Bernoulli beams with loading discontinuities. Several results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Dynamic pull-in instability of multilayer graphene NEMSs: non-classical continuum model and molecular dynamics simulations

Mohsen Nikfar et al.

Summary: This study developed a novel non-classical continuum model considering the effect of shear interaction between layers for multilayer graphene sheets (MLGSs). The equation governing the motion and corresponding boundary conditions of electrostatically actuated MLGSs based on the nonlocal shear multiplate theory were obtained. The model was validated using the Galerkin method and molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the nonlocal interlayer shear model can significantly reduce the differences between classical continuum mechanics and molecular dynamics.

Nonlocal strain and stress gradient elasticity of Timoshenko nano-beams with loading discontinuities

Andrea Caporale et al.

Summary: In this study, a unified approach is used to determine the strain-driven and stress-driven differential equations of Timoshenko nano-beams with loading discontinuities. The proposed models can simulate small scale effects with different types of constitutive laws and consider points of discontinuities for generalized internal forces. Novel constitutive continuity conditions are imposed at the beam interior points of loading discontinuities, providing an alternative to Dirac delta function. Closed-form solutions to practical cases are obtained using the proposed models.

Free transverse vibrations of nanobeams with multiple cracks

Hossein Darban et al.

Summary: In this study, a nonlocal model is proposed to investigate the size-dependent free transverse vibrations of nanobeams with cracks. The model takes into account the effect of cracks by introducing discontinuities in slope and transverse displacement at the cracked cross-section. The results show that the crack location, crack length, and nonlocality have an impact on the natural frequencies of the nanobeams, and the cracks can cause amplification and shielding effects on the natural frequencies.

Fracture analysis of nanobeams based on the stress-driven non-local theory of elasticity

Sabrina Vantadori et al.

Summary: The Mode I fracture behavior of edge- and centrally-cracked nanobeams is analyzed using both stress-driven non-local theory of elasticity and Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The study demonstrates that nanobeams exhibit superior fracture performance compared to large-scale beams, with the energy release rate decreasing as the nonlocality increases.

Size-dependent buckling analysis of nanobeams resting on two-parameter elastic foundation through stress-driven nonlocal elasticity model

Hossein Darban et al.

Summary: This study investigates the instability of nanobeams rested on two-parameter elastic foundations using the Bernoulli-Euler beam theory and stress-driven nonlocal elasticity model. Incorporating size-dependency into formulation, results show excellent agreement with existing literature and provide new insights into buckling loads of nanobeams on different foundations like Winkler and Pasternak. The nonlocal elasticity problem in a bounded domain is well-posed and inconsistencies within the Eringen nonlocal theory are addressed.

On nonlinear vibration and snap-through buckling of long FG porous cylindrical panels using nonlocal strain gradient theory

Hadi Babaei et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the nonlinear vibration and snap-buckling analysis of long cylindrical panels made of functionally graded porous materials, using an approximate nonlocal strain gradient model and high-order shear deformation theory. The mathematical formulations are based on the Hamilton principle and solve the partial differential equations for immovable long cylindrical panels pinned on both straight edges. Parametric studies show the effects of various parameters on the shell's characteristics.

Summary: A nonlocal strain gradient theory is developed for studying large amplitude vibrations of arches made of functionally graded porous material. Various models, including Reddy's third-order model, Timoshenko's first-order model, and the classical Euler-Bernoulli model, are analyzed in the study. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of different parameters on the frequencies of FG porous arches.

Summary: This paper presents a nonlinear formulation for beam-type structures using stress-driven nonlocal theory within different boundary conditions. The study investigates the bending response of beams under various conditions and compares the linear and nonlinear results using a numerical method. The influences of factors such as volume fraction/distribution pattern of graphene platelets, nonlocality, elastic foundation, and geometrical parameters are examined.

On the regularity of curvature fields in stress-driven nonlocal elastic beams

Marzia Sara Vaccaro et al.

Summary: In this study, elastostatic problems of Bernoulli-Euler nanobeams were investigated using the stress-driven nonlocal elasticity model, resulting in the output of elastic curvature fields. It was shown that fields of elastic curvature associated with piecewise smooth source fields and bi-exponential kernels are continuously differentiable in the whole domain. The effectiveness of interface conditions was demonstrated through the solution of an exemplar assemblage of beams subjected to discontinuous and concentrated loadings and to thermal curvatures nonlocally associated with discontinuous thermal gradients.
