Cross-kink unpinning controls the medium- to high-temperature strength of body-centered cubic NbTiZr medium-entropy alloy

Rajeshwar R. Eleti et al.

Summary: The deformation mechanisms of a NbTiZr body-centered cubic (BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA) were investigated by tensile testing at different temperatures. It was found that the alloy deformation is controlled by screw-dislocation slip, with cross-kinks/jogs observed frequently at most temperatures. At higher temperatures, the dominance of cross-kink strengthening leads to a temperature insensitive yield strength, while the disappearance of cross-kinks/edge dipoles above 1073 K results in a strength drop.

The hierarchical energy landscape of screw dislocation motion in refractory high-entropy alloys

Summary: This study constructs and reports the potential energy landscape governing screw dislocation motion in high-entropy alloys (HEAs). It reveals a hierarchical and multilevel structure, which retards dislocation movement and can be regulated by introducing chemical short-range order.

Superior High-Temperature Strength in a Supersaturated Refractory High-Entropy Alloy

Rui Feng et al.

Summary: High-entropy alloys show promising applications at high temperatures and a single-phase alloy with high-temperature strength can be designed based on intrinsic material characteristics. The high-temperature strength retention is attributed to mechanisms such as large atomic-size and elastic-modulus mismatches, insensitive temperature dependence of elastic constants, and dominance of non-screw character dislocations caused by strong solute pinning.

High-strength NbMoTaX refractory high-entropy alloy with low stacking fault energy eutectic phase via laser additive manufacturing

Hang Zhang et al.

Summary: The newly developed NbMoTaTi0.5Ni0.5 HEA exhibits high room-temperature compressive strength of 2297 MPa and high-temperature compressive strength of 651 MPa. The addition of Ni and Ti suppresses crack formation, enhances formability of NbMoTa HEA, and improves formability by transforming microcracks due to grain boundaries with low stacking fault energy. This study serves as a guideline for developing refractory high-entropy alloys via additive manufacturing like selective laser melting.

Low energy atomic traps sluggardize the diffusion in compositionally complex refractory alloys

Ankit Roy et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the atomic diffusion rate in complex alloys is slower than in pure metals, with higher activation energies. Strong attraction between unlike atomic pairs and the presence of low-energy atomic traps significantly hinder atom migration at high temperatures, reducing creep strain rates.

Local chemical fluctuation mediated ductility in body-centered-cubic high-entropy alloys

Yeqiang Bu et al.

Summary: This study captured the dynamic interaction between LCFs and dislocations in ductile BCC HfNbTiZr HEAs, demonstrating how LCFs influence strength and ductility by promoting dislocation interaction. The observed double cross-slips caused by LCFs homogenously distribute dislocations onto various atomic planes, contributing to ductilization in HfNbTiZr. These findings offer insights into the deformation mechanisms of HEAs and suggest new strategies for designing ductile BCC HEAs.

On short-range order strengthening and its role in high-entropy alloys

Claudio Geraldo Schon

Summary: Short-range order (SRO) strengthening in alloys is attributed to increased resistance to dislocation slip caused by breaking favorable bonds. This study focuses on the dissipated energy due to the formation of a diffuse antiphase boundary (APB), showing that SRO strengthening is important in defining the friction stress on gliding dislocations.

Cross-kinks control screw dislocation strength in equiatomic bcc refractory alloys

Xinran Zhou et al.

Summary: Research on refractory multi-element alloys with body-centered cubic structure has shown that chemical energy fluctuations play a significant role in their strength at high temperatures, which cannot be explained by standard models. The formation of cross kinks and self-pinning have been identified as key contributors to the alloy's strength.

Atomistic simulations of dislocation mobility in refractory high-entropy alloys and the effect of chemical short-range order

Sheng Yin et al.

Summary: The presence of short-range order influences the mobility of dislocations in high-entropy alloys, with edge dislocations being enhanced and double-kink nucleation in screw dislocations being reduced. A cross-slip locking mechanism is observed for the motion of screws, providing extra strengthening for refractory high-entropy alloy system.

High energy barriers for edge dislocation motion in body-centered cubic high entropy alloys

R. E. Kubilay et al.

Summary: Recent research suggests that edge dislocations in high-entropy alloys have high barriers for motion, leading to high strengths at elevated temperatures. Computational studies on two model alloys show agreement with theoretical predictions, validating the analytic theory for guiding alloy selection based on edge motion properties. Additionally, a reduced analytic model based on solute misfit volumes explains significant strength increases in certain alloy compositions, further supporting the effectiveness of the analytic theory in understanding alloy behavior.
