Direct visualization of polaron formation in the thermoelectric SnSe

Laurent P. Rene de Cotret et al.

Summary: SnSe is a layered material with high thermoelectric efficiency due to its anomalously low thermal conductivity caused by strong anharmonic coupling. The carrier system in SnSe is also determined by strong coupling to phonons, as visualized by polaron formation. The response of phonons to photodoping in SnSe shows bimodal and anisotropic lattice distortions that drive carrier localization. Quasi-one-dimensional polarons form quickly (300 fs), while three-dimensional polarons take longer (4 ps) due to the anisotropic electron-phonon coupling in SnSe. These results reveal a high density of polarons in SnSe at optimal doping levels, highlighting the importance of electron-phonon coupling for thermoelectric performance.

Atomic-Level Description of Thermal Fluctuations in Inorganic LeadHalide Perovskites

Oliviero Cannelli et al.

Summary: A comprehensive microscopic description of thermally induced distortions in lead halide perovskites has been provided in this study. The effects of thermal activation in CsPbBr3 nanocrystals were quantified across length scales with atomic-level precision. The temperature increase was found to significantly enhance the short-range structural distortions of the lead halide framework due to phonon anharmonicity. The study also proposed a framework for the description of phase transitions in lead halide perovskites.

Anisotropic, Nonthermal Lattice Disordering Observed in Photoexcited PbS Quantum Dots

Kamil M. Krawczyk et al.

Summary: The study revealed short-range nonthermal lattice distortions and increased atomic disorder in PbS colloidal quantum dots, particularly more pronounced in nanocrystals with a chloride-containing surface rather than only organic ligands as the size decreased. This suggests an anisotropic distribution of localized charge between different lattice terminations, impacting the lattice disordering preferentially along the (100) crystallographic directions.

Carrier-Specific Hot Phonon Bottleneck in CH3NH3PbI3 Revealed by Femtosecond XUV Absorption

Max Verkamp et al.

Summary: By measuring femtosecond carrier cooling in the organohalide perovskite semiconductor CH3NH3PbI3 using XUV and optical transient absorption spectroscopy, it was found that the initial hole distribution is 3.5 times hotter than the electron distribution when excited at 400 nm. At a specific carrier density, the holes can cool to less than 1000 K within 400 fs, placing significant constraints on the use of organohalide perovskites in hot carrier photovoltaics.

Summary: The study investigates the electron-phonon interactions in common perovskite films using transient absorption spectroscopy and density function theory calculations. The analysis reveals the complex relationship between carrier temperature and carrier density in HOIPs, shedding light on the hot-phonon bottleneck effect. The research provides a novel perspective on energy transfer in HOIPs and resolves existing experimental contradictions.

Polarons and Charge Localization in Metal-Halide Semiconductors for Photovoltaic and Light-Emitting Devices

Leonardo R. V. Buizza et al.

Summary: Metal-halide semiconductors have shown excellent performance in optoelectronic applications, with charge-lattice interactions and polaron formation playing important roles. The influence of variations in potential barriers and the presence of interfaces on the strength of polaronic effects in nanostructured and novel metal-halide materials is discussed. Ultimately, a complete understanding of polaronic effects is crucial for optimizing optoelectronic properties essential to energy and optoelectronic applications.

Coherent vibrational dynamics reveals lattice anharmonicity in organic-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals

Tushar Debnath et al.

Summary: The study reveals that halide ions in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites can influence the lattice vibrations of nanocrystals, leading to different coherent vibronic wave packets generation. Additionally, it shows that the PbI64- unit in FAPbI(3) nanocrystals can vibrate more freely compared to FAPbBr(3) nanocrystals, resulting in higher harmonics of fundamental modes. This intrinsic anharmonicity in the lead-halide framework plays a key role in the stability and energy transfer of perovskites.

Quantifying Photoinduced Polaronic Distortions in Inorganic Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Summary: This study investigates the photophysics of CsPbBr3 perovskites and reveals that the photoinduced carrier recombination can reversibly unlock structural deformation at the Br and Pb sites. By comparing with temperature-dependent XAS results, thermal effects are ruled out as the primary cause of distortion of the Pb-Br bonding motif during photoexcitation.

This method could be extended to other nonequilibrium phenomena involving coupled electron-phonon dynamics.

Nuclear dynamics of singlet exciton fission in pentacene single crystals

Helene Seiler et al.

Summary: Researchers directly observed the nuclear dynamics accompanying singlet exciton fission (SEF) in single crystal pentacene using femtosecond electron diffraction. The data revealed coherent atomic motions at 1 THz, incoherent motions, and an anisotropic lattice distortion representing the polaronic character of the triplet excitons.Long-range motions were found to play a decisive part in the electronic decoupling of the electronically correlated triplet pairs, shedding light on the ultrafast occurrence of SEF.
