Luminescent Defects in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Applications

Jana Zaumseil

Summary: Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit remarkable electronic and optical properties, especially in the presence of sp(3) defects which can be chemically tuned for enhanced photoluminescence; these defects have diverse applications in optical sensing, bioimaging, and as components in single-photon emitters and electroluminescent devices.

Quantum Photon Sources in WSe2 Monolayers Induced by Weakly Localized Strain Fields

Xinxin Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the creation of quantum emitters in semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers through local strain engineering. Optical signatures of weakly confined excitonic states supporting biexciton emission are observed in WSe2 monolayers deposited on the edges of as-fabricated trenches. Numerical simulations suggest that the quantum emitters originate from quasi-1D-like localized strain profiles induced by local topography variations at the trench edges.

Defect Engineering of Two-Dimensional Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides: Applications, Challenges, and Opportunities

Qijie Liang et al.

Summary: This review article highlights the role of chalcogen atomic defects in engineering 2D TMDs, particularly focusing on device performance improvements. Various approaches for creating chalcogen atomic defects and their effects on optical, electrical, and magnetic properties are systematically overviewed. The dynamic evolution and repair of chalcogen atomic defects are also discussed, along with perspectives on challenges and opportunities in the field.

Intrinsic donor-bound excitons in ultraclean monolayer semiconductors

Pasqual Rivera et al.

Summary: In this study, a new series of low energy excitonic emission lines in ultraclean monolayer WSe2 are reported, composed of three major peaks matching known phonons, and only appearing with electron doping. These excitonic satellites possess homogenous spatial and spectral distribution, strong power saturation, and anomalously long lifetimes.

Summary: Efficient on-chip integration of single-photon emitters is crucial for the application of photonic integrated circuits in quantum technologies; current approaches are limited, while two-dimensional semiconductors offer scalability; a scalable approach using a silicon nitride photonic waveguide has enabled strain-localization and coupling of single-photon emitters.

The role of chalcogen vacancies for atomic defect emission in MoS2

Elmar Mitterreiter et al.

Summary: The authors correlated various fabrication processes, optical spectroscopy, and electron microscopy to identify the optical signatures of chalcogen vacancies in monolayer MoS2. They found that chalcogen vacancies can be precisely patterned using ion beams and exhibit specific optical characteristics.

Trapping interlayer excitons in van der Waals heterostructures by potential arrays

Darien J. Morrow et al.

Summary: Transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures can accommodate interlayer excitons, and the dipole-dipole interactions between excitons play an important role in regulating exciton trapping. The effects of dipole interactions can be mitigated with small, deep traps achievable with atomic defects and moiré potentials.
