Twisted charge-density-wave patterns in bilayer 2D crystals and modulated electronic states

Yaoyao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the twist of charge density waves (CDWs) in bilayer 1T-NbSe2 vertical structures. The results show that the twist angles between the first and the second layer have a significant impact on the properties of the material, including the dI/dV behavior and the appearance of interlayer coupling states near the Fermi level. These findings provide new insights into the engineering of 2D materials and have potential applications in nanoelectronic devices.

Atomic-scale visualization of chiral charge density wave superlattices and their reversible switching

Xuan Song et al.

Summary: In this study, the authors used scanning tunneling microscopy to investigate the chirality switching process in a single-layer NbSe2 charge density wave (CDW) superlattice. They observed that the atomic arrangement of the CDW superlattice remained intact despite the switching of its chirality. Time-resolved imaging revealed the fast and dynamic nature of the chirality transition. Importantly, the switching could be reversibly achieved with an external electric field.

Ultrafast nanoimaging of the order parameter in a structural phase transition

Thomas Danz et al.

Summary: This research introduces ultrafast dark-field electron microscopy to investigate the order parameter across a structural phase transition, using ultrashort laser pulses to locally excite a thin film and imaging the transient state of the specimen with ultrashort electron pulses. The study tracks the evolution of charge-density wave domains in the material with femtosecond temporal and 5-nanometer spatial resolution, revealing relaxation pathways and domain wall dynamics. The selective contrast enhancement in this study will inspire future advancements in beam-shaping technology for ultrafast transmission electron microscopy.

Artificial heavy fermions in a van der Waals heterostructure

Viliam Vano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the synthesis and characterization of a two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure hosting artificial heavy fermions, providing a tunable platform for investigations of heavy-fermion physics. Using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, the researchers show that depending on the stacking order of the monolayers, either localized magnetic moments and the associated Kondo effect, or conduction electrons with a heavy-fermion hybridization gap can be revealed. The experiments realize an ultimately tunable platform for future experiments probing enhanced many-body correlations, dimensional tuning of quantum criticality and unconventional superconductivity in two-dimensional artificial heavy-fermion systems.

Zoology of domain walls in quasi-2D correlated charge density wave of 1T-TaS2

Jae Whan Park et al.

Summary: This study identifies the atomic and electronic structures of various discommensuration domain walls in 1T-TaS2 quenched metastably with nanoscale domain wall networks through scanning tunneling microscope and density functional theory calculations. The domain walls exhibit different in-gap states, with metallic states appearing only in certain types of domain walls. This work provides insights for engineering the functionality of domain walls in correlated van der Waals materials.
