High-Resolution Erasable Live Patterns Based on Controllable Ink Diffusion on the 3D Blue-Phase Liquid Crystal Networks

Fanshu Meng et al.

Summary: This study reports a high-resolution live pattern created by diffusion of ink on modified BPLC networks. The shape and color of the pattern change with time, resulting in unique spectrum changes. The hydrophobic substrate suppresses ink diffusion, enabling high-resolution patterns. The research is significant for the development of novel rewritable paper and high-quality optic devices based on BPLC materials.

Three-dimensional lattice deformation of blue phase liquid crystals under electrostriction

Yuxian Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, the three-dimensional lattice deformation of blue phase liquid crystals under electrostriction is investigated. A method to experimentally determine the lattice constants of blue phases under an electric field is proposed. The method is applied to thin films of blue phase liquid crystals to study their lattice deformation and azimuthal orientation evolution. The results show discrete elongation of blue phases along the field direction and larger lattice deformation in the field-perpendicular directions for BP I crystals. This work provides important insights into the electrostriction behavior of blue phases and the improvement of electro-optical performance of blue phase devices in practical applications.

Summary: This study introduces a series of tailored uniaxial rodlike mesogens into a blue phase system comprising biaxial dimeric mesogens, resulting in the observation of a continuous blue phase over a temperature range. The findings suggest that synergistic self-assembly behavior of biaxial and uniaxial mesogens plays a crucial role in achieving ultra-stable three-dimensional nanostructures of blue phases.
