Amphiphilically modified self-stratified siloxane-glycidyl carbamate coatings for anti-icing applications

AliReza Rahimi et al.

Summary: Icephobic coatings have been developed using amphiphilic siloxane-glycidyl carbamate coatings (AmpSiGC) to protect surfaces from deterioration and improve anti-icing performance. The coatings were prepared by incorporating polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to provide both hydrophobic and hydrophilic characteristics. The coatings showed promising performance for anti-icing applications with desirable barrier and mechanical properties in comparison to controls, as confirmed by surface characterization and evaluation of ice-adhesion, electrochemical impedance, and mechanical properties.

Triple-Scale Superhydrophobic Surface with Excellent Anti-Icing and Icephobic Performance via Ultrafast Laser Hybrid Fabrication

Rui Pan et al.

Summary: A new triple-scale micro/nanostructured superhydrophobic surface designed via ultrafast laser ablation and chemical oxidation exhibits excellent anti-icing and icephobic properties, with low ice adhesion strength and outstanding resistance to high humidity. The surface structure combines periodical microcone arrays, densely grown nanograsses, and dispersedly distributed microflowers, providing good Cassie state stability and preventing ice and water accumulation effectively.

Polysiloxane as icephobic materials - The past, present and the future

Yizhi Zhuo et al.

Summary: Polysiloxane is a popular material for passive surface icephobicity due to its tailorable properties. Research has categorized polysiloxane materials into three classes based on surface stiffness and evaluated their advantages and shortcomings. A reference coating thickness has been identified for optimizing icephobic coating design, and a surface icephobicity diagram has been presented to explore the mechanisms of breaking theoretical ice adhesion limits. The challenges and key research directions in applying polysiloxane icephobic materials have been discussed.

UV-LED as a New Emerging Tool for Curable Polyurethane Acrylate Hydrophobic Coating

Siti Khairunisah Ghazali et al.

Summary: This study utilized UV-LED technology to design a series of hydrophobic coatings based on urethane acrylate oligomer and fluorinated monomer, achieving high C=C conversion and gel fraction, reducing surface free energy, and enhancing hydrophobicity through migration of fluorine component. However, excessive fluorinated monomer content can lead to decreased transparency of the coating.

Macroscopic Evidence of the Liquidlike Nature of Nanoscale Polydimethylsiloxane Brushes

Xiaoxiao Zhao et al.

Summary: Macroscopic evidence shows the liquidlike nature of surface-tethered PDMS brushes, with ice adhering to them indefinitely. The PDMS brush ice adhesion displays rheological behavior reminiscent of liquids, allowing ice to detach solely by self-weight. Methylation results in omniphobicity, significantly higher contact angles, and especially increased repulsion of polar liquids.
