Exogenous Adenosine Antagonizes Excitatory Amino Acid Toxicity in Primary Astrocytes

Yingjiao Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that adenosine can enhance Na+-K+-ATPase function, upregulate the expression of glt-1, and increase glutamine synthesis in astrocytes by activating A2aR. Additionally, adenosine can inhibit the expression of gap junction protein (Cx43) and reduce glutamate diffusion.

Exosomal miR-21 secreted by IL-1β-primed-mesenchymal stem cells induces macrophage M2 polarization and ameliorates sepsis

Mengying Yao et al.

Summary: This study characterized the effects of miR-21 delivered by exosomes from MSCs on macrophage polarization in a mouse sepsis model. Beta MSC-derived exosomes induced M2-like polarization of macrophages more effectively, improving survival rates in septic mice. Exosomal miR-21 was identified as a key mediator of the immunomodulatory properties of MSCs induced by IL-1 beta pretreatment, providing a potential therapeutic basis for sepsis.

Exosomes from IL-1β-Primed Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibited IL-1β- and TNF-α-Mediated Inflammatory Responses in Osteoarthritic SW982 Cells

Mijin Kim et al.

Summary: The study showed that MSC exosomes primed with IL-1 beta exhibit significantly enhanced anti-inflammatory activity in osteoarthritic SW982 cells. This effect is mediated by miRNAs such as miR-147b and involves inhibition of the NF-kappa B pathway. Additionally, the presence of miR-147b in MSC-IL-Exo plays a crucial role in the regulation of inflammatory cytokines.

γ-Glutamylcysteine Alleviates Ischemic Stroke-Induced Neuronal Apoptosis by Inhibiting ROS-Mediated Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress

Hui-qin Li et al.

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a severe neurological disorder with limited therapeutic options, and oxidative stress is a critical factor in the ischemia/reperfusion injury process. This study explored the neuroprotective effects of gamma-glutamylcysteine (gamma-GC) on neuronal apoptosis and brain injury in ischemic stroke. The results showed that gamma-GC treatment mitigated oxidative stress, decreased neuronal apoptosis, and attenuated brain injury in ischemic conditions.

Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP): Neuroinflammation Biomarker in Acute Ischemic Stroke

Lisda Amalia

Summary: This study demonstrated a positive correlation between serum GFAP levels and the degree of neurological deficit in acute ischemic stroke patients. Higher GFAP levels were associated with higher NIHSS scores, indicating increased stroke severity and extent of brain damage. Additionally, a significant difference in serum GFAP levels was observed between ischemic stroke patients with large artery occlusion compared to small artery occlusion.

Immunomodulatory Biomaterials for Tissue Repair

Ricardo Whitaker et al.

Summary: This article discusses the immune cells involved in the inflammatory response to biomaterials and how biomaterial design can modulate their behavior to promote tissue integration. Activation of monocytes and macrophages, as well as controlling their interactions with other cell types, are key strategies to enhance biomaterial efficacy. Challenges in the clinical translation of immunomodulatory biomaterials and future directions in understanding and controlling the biomaterial-immune system interface are also addressed.
