Patterning Technologies for Metal Halide Perovskites: A Review

Lumeng Liang et al.

Summary: Metal halide perovskite (MHP) materials, with unique optical and electrical properties, have become a research hotspot. Patterning plays a crucial role in the preparation of MHP materials into optoelectronic devices. This review categorizes the current MHP patterning methods into three categories: template patterning, inkjet printing patterning, and laser patterning, providing detailed information on their operation, research status, pattern accuracy, advantages, and future development prospects. This review serves as a valuable reference for the research and application of MHP materials, as well as a methodological basis for future development.

Metal-halide perovskite-based edge emitting lasers

Supratim Basak et al.

Summary: First-order distributed feedback (DFB) lasers based on edge-emitting metal halide perovskites have been realized and studied for the first time. These lasers exhibit superior edge emission properties compared to the well-studied second-order DFB perovskite lasers, making them highly attractive for applications such as photonic integrated circuits. However, unexpectedly, the threshold levels of the first-order lasers are higher than those of the second-order devices, which is attributed to the efficiency of optical excitation depending on the incidence angle and grating period.

A Self-Assembly Method for Tunable and Scalable Nano-Stamps: A Versatile Approach for Imprinting Nanostructures

Yidenekachew J. Donie et al.

Summary: In this study, mechanically and thermally stable PSN-based imprinting stamps for NIL systems were successfully achieved through a phase-separation of a homopolymer/inorganic-organic hybrid polymer blend. These imprinting stamps are easily tunable and scalable by adjusting the formulation of homopolymer/hybrid polymer mixture and deposition conditions. The developed imprinting stamps have been integrated into roll-to-roll NIL system for patterning a polystyrene thin-film and demonstrated light management by nanopatterning of a perovskite semiconductor.

Quasi-CW Lasing from Directly Patterned and Encapsulated Perovskite Cavity at 260 K

Jiyoung Moon et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the generation of quasi-continuous wave (quasi-CW) lasing from directly patterned perovskite cavities up to high temperatures using nanoimprint lithography and a thin layer of polycarbonate for encapsulation. The polycarbonate layer effectively protects the devices from surface defects and environmental hazards. The results suggest that achieving continuous wave (CW) lasing at room temperature from directly patterned perovskite cavities is within reach.

Triangular Micro-Grating via Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing toward High-Performance Polarization-Sensitive Perovskite Photodetectors

Xiaoyu Tian et al.

Summary: Perovskites have become a popular material in the past decade due to their attractive properties. Optical nano/microstructures made of perovskites offer a convenient and efficient way to improve light-harvesting performance and polarization sensitivity. However, there is currently no low-cost and high-accuracy technique for large-scale fabrication of perovskite nano/microstructures. This study introduces a femtosecond laser direct writing technique to fabricate perovskite micro-gratings with different structure parameters. The micro-gratings exhibit excellent emission properties and the perovskite triangle grating photodetectors show outstanding performance with high responsivity and detectivity, low noise, and decent polarization sensitivity.

Cavity Engineering of Perovskite Distributed Feedback Lasers

Qi Dong et al.

Summary: Perovskite distributed feedback (DFB) lasers are attracting attention due to their solution processability, band gap tunability, single-mode operation, and low threshold. This study presents a facile approach to fabricate and design the cavities of perovskite surface-emitting DFB lasers. By adding polyvinylpyrrolidone into the perovskite precursor solutions, the cavity fabrication is simplified, and the effective index of the waveguide mode can be manipulated by varying the solution concentration. The fabricated perovskite DBF lasers achieved an optimized optical resonance and low threshold.

Summary: This study demonstrates room temperature continuous-wave lasing in quasi-2D perovskites, while highlighting the challenges in achieving the same in 3D films. By investigating bimolecular and Auger recombination rates in a phase-stable 3D perovskite, with the help of high-index substrates, the researchers observed a decrease in the bimolecular recombination coefficient with increasing temperature, influencing the temperature dependence of ASE threshold.

Exciton versus free carrier emission: Implications for photoluminescence efficiency and amplified spontaneous emission thresholds in quasi-2D and 3D perovskites

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Among perovskite semiconductors, quasi-2D materials show brighter PL emission compared to 3D materials, but tend to have higher ASE thresholds. By increasing the volume fraction of thick quantum wells through adjusting the well thickness and size, lower ASE thresholds in quasi-2D materials can be achieved. Targeting fast free charge carrier recombination rates rather than maximum photoluminescence quantum yields under low power excitation is critical for the material development of quasi-2D materials for gain applications.
