Fat inclusions strongly alter membrane mechanics

Alexandre Santinho et al.

Summary: Neutral lipids (NLs) synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum can alter a lipid bilayer's mechanical properties, especially in the presence of negatively curved phospholipids. The presence of NLs, especially when supplied by lipid droplets (LDs), can decrease the bilayer's area expansion modulus and increase lysis tension while impacting membrane bending rigidity in different ways. Understanding how NLs modify membrane mechanics may have implications for disease pathologies or anticancer treatments targeting NLs.

Nanoparticle-Induced Disorder at Complex Liquid-Liquid Interfaces: Effects of Curvature and Compositional Synergy on Functional Surfaces

Colin M. Basham et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of surfactant monolayers at interfaces plays a crucial role in various tasks, and the study of coassembly mechanisms and intermolecular interactions is still an emerging and challenging field. Gold nanoparticles striped with hydrophobic and hydrophilic ligands interact with phospholipids at a liquid-liquid interface, resulting in surface-bound complexes. The research demonstrates that the interactions between nanoparticles and phospholipids drive the assembly of lipid-nanoparticle complexes at the interface, enhancing lipid adsorption.

Investigating the structural properties of hydrophobic solvent-rich lipid bilayers

Valeria Zoni et al.

Summary: In vitro reconstitutions of lipid membranes are crucial for understanding the molecular complexity and cellular processes, but some methods may contain residual hydrophobic solvents. Research indicates that the presence of hydrophobic solvents significantly affects membrane thickness, but has moderate effects on surface properties, membrane order, and lateral stress.
