Characterization of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic and thermosetting polyimide matrix composites manufactured by using various synthesized PI precursor resins

Mustafa Cakir et al.

Summary: Manufacturing thermoplastic and thermosetting PI matrix composites with CF reinforcement was investigated in this study. The thermoplastic composite obtained from PAAS precursor showed superior mechanical and thermal properties compared to other composites. However, the NA-terminated PAAS precursor did not exhibit similar effect in terms of mechanical properties, while the NA-terminated PAA precursor resin showed high mechanical properties in addition to its thermal properties.

Comparison of toughening mechanisms in natural silk-reinforced composites with three epoxy resin matrices

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: Natural silk fibre can enhance the toughness and impact strength of composites when reinforced in polymer matrices, with the epoxy resin derived from bisphenol-A epoxy and aliphatic diamine precursors showing the highest performance in terms of tensile breaking energy and impact strength. The toughening mechanisms in these composites are mainly crack propagation and fiber pull-out, regardless of whether the matrix is brittle or ductile. The study aims to provide guidelines for designing matrices in silk fibre-reinforced plastics with optimal toughness by identifying key toughening mechanisms.

Nabil Kadhim et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional nanofibers foam (3D NFF) has been fabricated and applied to enhance epoxy resin composite, showing improved compressive and flexural strength compared to pure epoxy. The 3D NFF skeletons with different densities were fabricated by regulating growth conditions, and conveniently modified with a silane coupling agent to improve interface interaction with the epoxy matrix.

A Combined Theoretical and Experimental Study of the Polymer Matrix-Mediated Stress Transfer in a Cellulose Nanocomposite

Anna Peterson et al.

Summary: The study shows that direct cellulose/cellulose interactions are not necessary for reinforcement in cellulose nanocrystal composites. Instead, strong cellulose/polymer interactions, such as ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding, play a crucial role in stress transfer and reinforcement. Orienting cellulose nanocrystals through melt spinning can reduce cellulose/cellulose interactions, leading to an efficient reinforcing effect in the composite.

Cross-Linking Effect on Segmental Dynamics of Well-Defined Epoxy Resins

Atsuomi Shundo et al.

Summary: Increasing the cross-linking density in epoxy resins leads to a higher glass transition temperature and a decrease in the spatial scale of cooperative rearranging region, accompanied by an increase in dynamic heterogeneity. This knowledge can help to better understand the physical properties of thermosetting polymers.

Deep Retrosynthetic Reaction Prediction using Local Reactivity and Global Attention

Shuan Chen et al.

Summary: Retrosynthesis is a fundamental problem in chemistry, and the goal of AI-aided retrosynthesis is to automate the process by learning from previous chemical reactions. This study introduces a new local retrosynthesis framework, inspired by the chemical intuition that molecular changes occur mainly locally during reactions, and refines the model to account for the nonlocal effects of chemical reactions through a global attention mechanism.

Prediction of chemical reaction yields using deep learning

Philippe Schwaller et al.

Summary: Artificial intelligence is playing a crucial role in organic chemistry, particularly in areas such as reaction prediction and synthesis planning. Despite the potential of accurately predicting reaction yields, it has received less attention compared to other aspects. Predicting reaction yields can guide chemists in selecting high-yielding reactions and reducing the number of experimental attempts.
