Role of Nanoscale Roughness and Polarity in Odd-Even Effect of Self-Assembled Monolayers

Chuanshen Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of solvent polarity on the roughness-dependency of wetting behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed on different surface morphology of Ag-based substrate. The results show that the roughness-dependent behavior of SAMs is not only determined by substrate roughness, but also by the polarity of the probing liquid.

Electronic property modulation on molecular junctions: Electrochemistry and beyond

Jiaxin Guo et al.

Summary: This review provides opinions on recent advances in electronic modulation of molecular junctions through electrochemical and other methods. The electrostatic potential on the molecule/electrolyte interface can be modulated by electrochemically induced ion absorption. Additionally, the electrical responses to electrochemical redox reactions and chelation at the interfaces of molecular junctions on solid state are introduced. Other environmental factors that influence the electronic properties of molecular junctions are also discussed. These emerging studies offer promising strategies for modulating the electronic properties of molecules through environmental factors, and have extended applications in environmental sensors and functional devices.

Conductance Switching in Liquid Crystal-Inspired Self-Assembled Monolayer Junctions

Julian M. Dlugosch et al.

Summary: This article presents a prototype of a ferroelectric tunnel junction (FTJ) based on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of small, functional molecules. The SAM is highly uniform and thin, and exhibits reversible conductance switching. Compared to inorganic material-based FTJs, this approach using SAMs of small organic molecules allows for a higher level of functional complexity while maintaining a robust and simple fabrication process. The technology is expected to find applications in information storage and processing.

Rectification in Molecular Tunneling Junctions Based on Alkanethiolates with Bipyridine-Metal Complexes

Junwoo Park et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the rectification mechanism in molecular tunneling junctions based on alkanethiolates terminated by a bipyridine group complexed with different metal ions. The study shows that the rectification behavior is determined by the accessibility of molecular orbitals at different bias voltages. The difference in tunneling mechanism at negative bias causes the variation in rectification ratio between the two types of junctions.

Molecular Conformation in Charge Tunneling across Large-Area Junctions

Chuanshen Du et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that charge tunneling in self-assembled monolayers is correlated with conformational degrees of freedom and the orientation of the head group, showing an odd-even effect. The analysis of current density distributions highlights the importance of higher statistical moments in understanding these dynamic systems.

Decision trees within a molecular memristor

Sreetosh Goswami et al.

Summary: The profuse dendritic-synaptic interconnections among neurons in the neocortex enable sophisticated decision-making abilities that vastly outperform any artificial electronic analogues. The brain's dynamically reconfigurable network provides flexibility and adaptability to changing environments, in contrast to the hard-wired threshold switches of state-of-the-art semiconductor logic circuits. By re-imagining fundamental electronic circuit elements and expressing complex logic in nanometre-scale material properties, the study demonstrates voltage-driven conditional logic interconnectivity among distinct molecular redox states to embed decision trees within a single memristor, allowing for non-volatile switching transitions between conductance levels in a single sweep cycle. Multiple redox transitions in a molecular memristor can be utilized to undertake complex and reconfigurable logic operations in a single time step.
