One Decade of Computational Studies on Single-Atom Alloys: Is In Silico Design within Reach?

Romain Reocreux et al.

Summary: Single-atom alloys (SAAs) are a novel class of materials composed of a coinage metal doped with another metal at the single-atom level, combining the activity and selectivity of each constituent. Computational studies using density functional theory (DFT) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations have contributed significantly to our understanding of SAA catalysis over the past decade, shaping the way for experimental exploration of new SAA catalysts.

Tianyi Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, 108 Cu-based single-atom alloy (SAA) catalysts were constructed and their inherent structure-activity relationship for nitrogen reduction reactions (NRR) was investigated. The number of d electrons in the doped transition metal atom was identified as a key descriptor for evaluating NRR activity. The best performing SAA showed the lowest overpotential, and a machine-learning method was also presented to describe and regulate the characteristics of these catalysts.

Electroreduction of N2 to NH3 catalyzed by a Mn/Re(111) single-atom alloy catalyst with high activity and selectivity: a new insight from a first-principles study

Ning Cao et al.

Summary: This study employs first-principles calculations to investigate the effects of doping on the activity and selectivity of single-atom alloy (SAA) catalysts for the electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR). It is found that the Mn/Re(111) SAA catalyst exhibits higher affinity towards N-2 molecule adsorption than H atom, leading to improved selectivity of eNRR. Electronic structure analysis reveals that the *N-2 molecule on the surface of Mn/Re(111) SAA catalyst can be hydrogenated to *NNH, generating a highly reactive *N-2- radical through charge transfer from the H atom. The calculated free energy changes along the favorable distal pathway are close to 0 eV or even negative, indicating the high activity and selectivity of Mn/Re(111) SAA catalyst for eNRR.

Summary: In this study, the structures and electrochemical properties of two-dimensional single transition-metal anchored square tetracyanoquinodimethane monolayers were systematically studied using density functional theory. Two promising electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction catalysts, Nb-sTCNQ and Mo-sTCNQ, were obtained through screenings and reaction path research. The high catalytic activity of these catalysts can be attributed to the effective charge transfer and small energy input required for the reduction processes.

Summary: The heterogeneous Pd/Tio(2) catalyst fabricated by engineering the electronic structure of a single Pd-1 atom on monolayered Ti0.87O2 nanosheet (Pd-1-Ti0.87O2) significantly boosts the Suzuki reaction at room temperature, achieving a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 11,110 h(-1). Various in situ techniques revealed that Pd-1 can efficiently dissociate chemisorbed bromobenzene, particularly cleaving the C-Br bond, leading to the enhanced activity attributed to optimized charge state of Pd-1 within the Pd1O4 realm via charge transfer.
