Laser Cooling and Trapping of Rare-Earth-Doped Particles

Galina Nemova

Summary: This review discusses the optical refrigeration of rare-earth-doped low-phonon micro- and nanocrystals using anti-Stokes fluorescence. Hybrid optical refrigeration, which suppresses both the translational and internal vibrational thermal energy of the particles, is presented as the latest achievement. Laser cooling of nanoparticles is a promising tool for fundamental quantum-mechanical studies, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and precision measurements of forces.

Yb- and Er concentration dependence of the upconversion luminescence of highly doped NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaYF4:Lu core/shell nanocrystals prepared by a water-free synthesis

Christian Wurth et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the dependence of UC luminescence quantum yield on the dopant concentration in solid NaYF4:Yb,Er/NaYF4:Lu upconversion core/shell nanocrystals. The results showed that high Yb3+ concentrations can increase the particle absorption cross section and brightness of UCNC, while high Er3+ concentrations can decrease the luminescence brightness.

Min Ying Tsang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the simultaneous utilization of upconversion and downconversion luminescence properties by doping praseodymium (III) and ytterbium (III) ions into a nanosized fluoride matrix for biomedical applications. The emission modes in a single nanoparticle include near infrared downconversion luminescence for bioimaging and ultraviolet C range upconversion luminescence for germicide action. Additionally, the potential of near infrared luminescence bioimaging through biological tissues is shown.

Phonon-Mediated Nonradiative Relaxation in Ln3+-Doped Luminescent Nanocrystals

Rui Shi et al.

Summary: Unsatisfactory photoluminescence efficiency of Ln3+-doped nanocrystals severely limits their practical application. The commonly accepted phonon frequency-orientated model for phonon-mediated nonradiative relaxation is being questioned due to growing observational anomalies. A better understanding of this topic is needed.

Umit Demirbas et al.

Summary: The study investigates temperature and doping dependence of fluorescence lifetime in Yb:YLF crystals, revealing radiation-trapping prolonged lifetimes and the challenges of acquiring radiation-trapping free signals at high doping levels. The double-exponential decay behavior and excitation intensity dependent profile were observed for highly doped samples, while time dynamics of upconverted emission provided insights on energy transfer mechanisms.

Laser Refrigeration by an Ytterbium-Doped NaYF4 Microspinner

Elisa Ortiz-Rivero et al.

Summary: Thermal control of liquids with high spatial resolution is crucial for single molecule/cell studies and advanced microfluidic devices. While remote heating of liquids is easily achieved using laser beams, localized cooling is much more challenging. This study demonstrates remote cooling in D2O using ytterbium-doped NaYF4 microparticles and mechanical thermometry, achieving liquid refrigeration below ambient conditions by over -6 K.

Temperature-dependent radiative lifetime of Yb:YLF: refined cross sections and potential for laser cooling

Stefan Pueschel et al.

Summary: By revisiting the spectroscopic characterization of ytterbium-doped LiYF4 (Yb:YLF), it was found that the emission cross sections and radiative lifetimes are temperature-dependent, which can be used for laser cooling application design. Fit equations for important transition peak values as a function of temperature were provided, while the necessary crystal purity for achieving laser cooling was also emphasized based on the spectroscopic data.
