Design and mechanism exploration of single-crystalline NCM811 materials with superior comprehensive performance for Li-ion batteries

Xiangbang Kong et al.

Summary: Although single-crystalline LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 (SC NCM) materials have advantages in cycle performance, storage performance, and thermal stability, the comprehensive performance is not perfect enough. This study focuses on the modification of SC NCM materials by doping with titanium (Ti) element, which improves the structural stability, cycling performance, rate property, high voltage resistance, and thermal stability. The doping mechanism is studied to provide reference for further modification of SC NCM materials.

Summary: The in situ modification strategy to form a uniform and conformal Li1.8Sc0.8Ti1.2(PO4)(3) (LSTP) protective layer helps to construct a robust cathode-electrolyte interphase thin film, improving stability and preventing intergranular cracks. Furthermore, the LSTP conductive modification layer enhances lithium-ion transport, leading to a high reversible capacity and good capacity retention even after multiple cycles.

Probing thermally-induced structural evolution during the synthesis of layered Li-, Na-, or K-containing 3d transition-metal oxides

Weibo Hua et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural transformation mechanism induced by Li/Na/K-ion insertion during high-temperature solid-state reaction was revealed using in situ high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction. The decomposition of lithium sources was identified as the most critical factor for the formation of metastable intermediates or impurities during the process of Li-rich layered Li[Li0.2Ni0.2Mn0.6]O2 formation.

Dispersion and depression mechanism of sodium silicate on quartz: Combined molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations

Haiqing Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dispersion and depression mechanism of sodium silicate on quartz through molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that a stable adsorption layer of sodium silicate prevented other substances from contacting quartz. Sodium silicate adsorbed on the quartz surface mainly in the form of SiO(OH)(3)(-) and Si(OH)(4), with strong hydrogen and covalent bonds as the main driving forces.

Optimized Ni-Rich NCMA Cathode for Electric Vehicle Batteries

Nam-Yung Park et al.

Summary: The electrochemical and structural stabilities of a conventional NCMA90 cathode and a core-shell with concentration gradient NCMA90 cathode were evaluated, with the latter showing unique microstructure that effectively suppressed microcrack formation and propagation in the highly charged state. These features allowed the core-shell cathode to maintain 90.7% of its initial capacity after 1000 cycles at full depth of discharge, enabling higher electrochemical performance and the development of cost-effective Li-ion batteries.

Capacity Fading Mechanisms in Ni-Rich Single-Crystal NCM Cathodes

Hoon-Hee Ryu et al.

Summary: The study found that despite the high resistance to microcracking, the electrochemical performance of single-crystal NCM cathodes is inferior to polycrystalline NCM cathodes in terms of capacity and cycling stability. During cycling, the lithium concentrations in single-crystal NCM cathodes become spatially inhomogeneous, leading to the coexistence of phases with different unit cell dimensions within a single particle, which affects lithium ion diffusion and causes rapid capacity fading.
