LISzyme Biosensors: DNAzymes Embedded in an Anti-biofouling Platform for Hands-free Real-Time Detection of Bacterial Contamination in Milk

Hanie Yousefi et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed LISzymes, which are DNAzymes incorporated in lubricant-infused surfaces, to overcome nonspecific binding challenges in biosensors for complex food textures. Our results showed that LISzyme biosensors are more effective in preventing nonspecific binding compared to other commonly used blocking methods. Furthermore, the use of LISs did not affect the DNAzyme's ability to effectively and specifically detect its target, resulting in a striking improvement in performance. LISzymes hold promise for real-time monitoring of food contamination and other biosensing applications.

Enhancing osseointegration and mitigating bacterial biofilms on medical-grade titanium with chitosan-conjugated liquid-infused coatings

Martin Villegas et al.

Summary: Titanium alloys, especially medical-grade Ti-6Al-4 V, are commonly used in orthopaedic applications due to their excellent properties. However, implant infection and biofilm formation can lead to failure of the prosthesis. Researchers have developed a chitosan-impregnated slippery liquid-infused surface (LIS) coating that promotes cell adhesion and prevents biofilm formation.

The challenge of lubricant-replenishment on lubricant-impregnated surfaces

Philipp Baumli et al.

Summary: Lubricant-impregnated surfaces are two-component surface coatings that utilize a scaffold to stabilize a fluid lubricant, preventing the attachment of immiscible drops. The depletion of lubricant can be caused by various mechanisms and strategies for replenishing lubricant include spraying, stimuli-responsive release, and built-in reservoirs. Improvements in scaffold design and chemical compatibility can help delay lubricant depletion.
