Does participatory farmer-to-farmer training improve the adoption of sustainable land management practices?

Moses Mosonsieyiri Kansanga et al.

Summary: Research shows that participatory farmer-to-farmer training has a positive impact on improving sustainable land management practices among smallholder farmers, increasing the adoption rate of SLM technologies. In resource-constrained settings, participatory F2F training may offer a cost-effective way to reach a wide range of smallholder farmers and promote the use of SLM practices.

Drivers of compliance monitoring in forest commons

Graham Epstein et al.

Summary: The study of 177 forest user groups indicates that these groups are more likely to self-organize to monitor compliance when they design the rules locally, have a larger number of members, and are located close to or far from markets. Local leadership also plays an important role in certain contexts, such as smaller groups near markets.

Social value shift in favour of biodiversity conservation in the United States

Michael J. Manfredo et al.

Summary: A large-scale study spanning over a decade in 19 US states indicates a shift in wildlife values towards considering them as part of one's community, rather than just resources for human benefit. This shift is strongly associated with state-level values and urbanization trends.

When the whole is less than the sum of all parts-Tracking global-level impacts of national sustainability initiatives

Andrea S. Downing et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of reforestation programs in China on exporting countries, revealing that the sustainability progress in China is offset by deforestation and cross-sectoral impacts in other countries. Through a three-step multi-method approach, the study provides insights into tracking global-level impacts of national sustainability initiatives and identifying drivers of unsustainability for effective sustainability policy design.

Six modes of co-production for sustainability

Josephine M. Chambers et al.

Summary: Co-production is a method that combines research and practice to promote sustainable development, involving diverse goals, terminologies, and practices. By comparing 32 projects from around the world, the study found diversity in co-production methods, including differences in understanding and application of objectives, power, politics, and impact pathways. The analysis identified various modes of co-production, each with unique potential and challenges.

Harnessing the potential of vulnerability assessments for managing social- ecological systems

Lauric Thiault et al.

Summary: The concept of vulnerability has evolved to include the management of social-ecological systems, with a 12-step framework presented to help practitioners minimize exposure, reduce sensitivity, and enhance adaptive capacity. Future directions include applying biocultural approaches, building knowledge about nonclimate stressors, and anticipating potential trade-offs and maladaptation to address sustainability challenges. The framework provides a roadmap for developing integrated vulnerability assessments that are robust, context-specific, and relevant to the management of SES.

Towards a caring transdisciplinary research practice: navigating science, society and self

My M. Sellberg et al.

Summary: Transdisciplinary research is essential for addressing complex social-ecological sustainability challenges, but researchers often struggle to balance scientific rigor, societal impact, and self-care. The 'Triple-S' heuristic emphasizes caring for Science, Society, and Self in research practice to foster a balanced and flourishing transdisciplinary research environment. Solutions-oriented approaches, such as developing a theory of change, are needed to enable a supportive academic environment for transdisciplinary research practice.

Can participatory action research foster social learning in communities struggling for land tenure?

Jonathan von Below et al.

Summary: This paper examines the potential of participatory action research (PAR) in promoting social learning in a specific region in Latin America, discussing its effectiveness in improving the situation for disadvantaged actors in land tenure conflicts. Through a case study of four socio-ecological systems, various methods were used to obtain empirical evidence of social learning and changes in network structure, indicating that PAR intervention has contributed to improvements in connections between actors and empowerment of the most disadvantaged, resulting in more effective interactions for problem-solving and information exchange. More evaluations are needed to analyze which initiatives are consolidated within communities and better understand the potential and limitations of this approach.
