Screening for Social Risk at Federally Qualified Health Centers: A National Study

Megan B. Cole et al.

Summary: This study examines the social risk screening capabilities of Federally Qualified Health Centers across the United States. The findings show that a majority of health centers collect social risk data, but there are variations between states. Factors such as health center size and Medicaid contracts influence the screening capabilities. The study suggests targeting social risk screening resources to smaller health centers to promote the adoption of screening tools.

Applying a Health Access Framework to Understand and Address Food Insecurity

Nasser Sharareh et al.

Summary: The prevalence of food insecurity in the United States has remained high, well above the Healthy People 2030 goal, for the past two decades. Current efforts to address food insecurity are hindered by inadequate measures and lack of consideration for larger food access barriers. To achieve the goal of reducing food insecurity to 6%, better and faster methods for monitoring and interventions are needed. This paper reviews the key contributors to food insecurity, explores the limitations of current measures, and highlights the potential of data from nonprofit organizations in understanding and addressing food insecurity and its associated social needs.

The association between social needs and chronic conditions in a large, urban primary care population

Caroline G. Heller et al.

Summary: There is consensus that social needs have an impact on health outcomes, with a positive association found between social needs and specific chronic conditions such as depression, alcohol/drug use disorder, and smoking. Individuals with more social needs are more likely to have elevated PHQ-2 scores and other health issues, suggesting the importance of addressing unmet social needs to optimize health outcomes in communities with a dual burden of poverty and chronic disease.
