This study examines the impact of barite rocks on hammers made from HCWCI using a three-dimensional finite element model. The main findings show that mass loss is strongly influenced by impact conditions.
Barite sulfate (BaSO4) is considered as a significant mineral substance used as a weighting agent for all types of drilling fluids. Meanwhile, during barite production, crushers used for the grinding step are affected by catastrophic wear damage. In this study, a three-dimension finite element (FE) model is carried out in order to analyze the effect of the barite rocks' impact on the hammers made from High Chromium White Cast Iron (HCWCI). Brittle damage and elastoplastic material behavior are employed for both barite and HCWCI, respectively. While the latter was described as an elastoplastic model, the material removal is related to the ductile damage model. The impact wear evolution is examined based on the impact conditions, namely velocity impact, angle impact, and barite rock size. The main results show that the mass loss is strongly affected by those parameters. The numerical model is proven to be effective in predicting the damage wear mechanism. The numerical simulations and the investigation results are congruent with the focal literature of the present field of study.
